Job overview

The Department of General Surgery at Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust is seeking to appoint a Locum Consultant in Emergency General Surgery with a subspecialty interest in bariatric surgery. This is a 10 Programmed Activity (PA) substantive post, comprising 8 Direct Clinical Care (DCC) and 2 Supporting Professional Activities (SPA). While primarily based at St Mary’s Hospital, occasional clinical commitments at other sites within the Trust may be required. 

St Mary’s Hospital is a designated Major Trauma Centre, and the post includes participation in the emergency general surgery on-call rota on a 1:8 basis, subject to departmental needs. The appointee will contribute to the ongoing development of effective emergency surgical pathways, with a particular focus on supporting the Trust’s four-hour target performance and ambulatory care services. 

The successful candidate will be fully independent and proficient in bariatric surgery, including complex revision procedures and laparoscopic bile duct exploration. In addition, applicants must demonstrate competency in general, benign upper gastrointestinal (GI), and bariatric surgery in both elective and emergency settings. 

A post-Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) fellowship in bariatric and benign upper GI surgery, along with prior consultant-level experience, is essential.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will; 

  • ·         Provide high-quality care to surgical patients in line with Trust standards. 
  • ·         Maintain GMC specialist registration and clinical competencies. 
  • ·         Attend all agreed clinical sessions and participate in direct patient care. 
  • ·         Involve patients in decision-making and respond to their views. 
  • ·         Support and deliver high-quality teaching to medical students and healthcare staff. 
  • ·         Act as an educational supervisor and participate in appraisals and training accreditation. 
  • ·         Contribute to translational research and comply with research governance protocols. 
  • ·         Drive clinical efficiency, quality outcomes, and operational performance. 
  • ·         Support financial management initiatives including cost-saving measures. 
  • ·         Oversee junior doctor rotas, leave planning, and recruitment processes. 
  • ·         Ensure compliance with working time regulations and appropriate cover   arrangements. 
  • ·         Participate in job planning, team objectives, and service improvement initiatives.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

We are seeking a dynamic and committed Consultant Surgeon to join our team in delivering outstanding surgical care. The post holder will be responsible for providing high-quality patient-centred clinical services, maintaining specialist registration, and demonstrating continued professional development. A strong commitment to safety, efficiency, and quality improvement is essential. 

The role includes direct clinical care, active involvement in surgical education, research collaboration, and performance management across key operational domains such as LOS, readmission rates, infection control, and waiting list management. You will be expected to lead and support junior doctors, ensuring safe staffing, rota management, and compliance with EWTD. The post also includes responsibilities for appraisals, job planning, and training accreditation. 

The Trust supports professional growth through Continuing Medical Education and encourages participation in research and innovation to advance clinical practice. You will work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team to meet service goals and improve patient outcomes.

Education/Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Basic medical degree
  • Full GMC registration
  • CCT in General Surgery or equivalent (equivalence must be confirmed by GMC by date of AAC)
  • On the GMC Specialist Register (or within 6 months for CCT date)

Knowledge & Skills

Essential criteria
  • Experience in general, bariatric and upper GI elective surgery at consultant level
  • Experience in general emergency surgery including common paediatric emergencies at consultant level
  • Ability to offer an expert clinical opinion within the speciality
  • Ability to independently run the acute surgical take
  • ATLS
  • Previous Major Trauma Centre experience
  • Previous Code Red Management
  • DSTS
  • Independent in Laparoscopic bile duct exploration
