Job overview

 Post-FRCS applicants are invited to apply for a Senior Fellow in Complex Knee Surgery post in the Trauma & Orthopaedic Department at St Mary’s and Charing Cross Hospitals from June 2026 for 12 months. 

 The fellowship provides solid grounding in primary knee arthroplasty, experience in robotic knee surgery, as well as exposure to complex revision surgery.

 The Major Trauma Centre at St Mary’s provides a huge opportunity to gain experience in the management of and surgery related to, high volume major trauma and polytrauma.  The elective centre at Charing Cross has been designated as the regional Major Revision Centre. The successful candidates will join a young and vibrant department, with additional opportunities to conduct research, take part in leadership and audit programmes and help organisation of middle grade work.  Many of our previous candidates have progressed on to consultant posts.

 There are weekly dedicated trauma lists and regular elective surgery lists. The post is cross-site but the on-call commitment is off-site for Charing Cross Hospital (plus senior cover for St Mary’s if an ST3 is on call or in cases where emergency cover is required). Approximately every 5 months you will also have an SpR of the week on-call commitment at St Mary’s. The banding is 1B with London allowance. 

We are looking for a fellow who can start in June 2026. Please clarify earliest start date on your application.

Main duties of the job

 The fellow will divide his/her time between outpatient clinics, inpatient cover and trauma / elective operating lists. Operating lists include both independent and supervised trauma theatre cover at St Mary’s and elective lists at Charing Cross. There will be a degree of flexibility to accommodate the successful candidate’s preferences and interest

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Title of Post: Senior Fellow in Complex Knee Surgery (Trauma & Orthopaedics)

Main site of activity: St. Mary’s Hospital & Charing Cross Hospital

Background to the Post:  This is a post FRCS-Fellowship to gain experience in complex knee surgery

Role Summary: Fellowship in Trauma and Orthopaedics Functioning at post FRCS (Orth) middle grade level, with the aim of gaining experience in complex knee reconstructive surgery including robotic. 

Duties and responsibilities: Duties of a senior fellow in Trauma and Orthopaedics Clinics, Theatres, and ward cover of inpatients along being on call for the Major Trauma Centre / elective centre. 

There are weekly dedicated trauma lists and regular elective surgery lists. The post is across-site (SMH/CXH/HH) but the on-call commitment is off-site for Charing Cross Hospital with the other senior fellows (plus senior cover for St Mary’s if an ST3 is on call or in cases where emergency cover is required). Approximately every 5 months you will also have an SpR of the week on-call commitment at St Mary’s. The job banding is 1B with London allowance.
