The successful applicant will contribute to the provision of a routine comprehensive diagnostic haematopathology service within the SE London’s HMDS while based in the histopathology department, to include blood, aspirate, bone marrow biopsies, lymph node tissue and all accompanying ancillary studies (flow cytometry, cytogenetics, molecular testing). The successful candidate will undertake a range of duties under the supervision of the relevant Haematopathology Consultants. Candidates will have the opportunity to develop their knowledge of a wide range of haematolyphoid pathology. Duties will also include preparing for and attending multi-disciplinary team meetings.

You must be fully registered with the GMC and hold a Licence to Practice and post CCT in histopathology or haematology.

This post would be invaluable for candidates who wish to develop a specialised interest in Haematology diagnostics/Haematopathology following completion of Specialist Training in Haematopathogy, Histopathology (UK) or equivalent qualifications worldwide. 

The appointee will also take an active role in haematology specimen reporting.  This will be done systematically with specific rotations covering bone marrow, lymphoid tissues, and rotations in each of the HDMS diagnostic laboratories (immunophenotyping, cytogenetics, molecular).

You will be based within the Histopathology department and will be expected to deal with specimens pertaining to haematopathology, including (minimal) cut up and sample triage, slide reviewing and reporting alongside the assigned supervising consultant. 

Rotations will include learning and reporting within all laboratories within the SE-HMDS (3:2): cytomorphology, histopathology, immunophenotyping, cytogenetic and molecular diagnostics.  

Dedicated peripheral blood interpretation and reporting will also be incorporated.

Responsibilities will also include: 

  • Attending Lymphoma, Myeloma and Myeloid Multi-disciplinary team meetings
  • Attending and teaching at didacting sessions in Haematology/Haematopathology (post-graduate education)
  • Teaching and supervising specialist trainees in Haematology/Histopathology and laboratory staff.

Qualifications & Registration

  • Full registration with General Medical Council (GMC)
  • Holder of or eligible for GMC specialist registration in the fields of Haematology or Histopathology (CCT in Haematology/Histopathology)
  • MBBS/MB ChB or evidence of equivalent qualification
