We are pleased to offer this opportunity to work as a Clinical Fellow in Medical Microbiology and/or Infectious Diseases at Denmark Hill site of King's College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust.  

This is a replacement Clinical Fellow post focusing on supporting the Medical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases services.  You will be based at Denmark Hill and be part of a dynamic team of consultants at both Denmark Hill (DH) and the PRUH sites with expertise across a broad range of areas including mycology, critical care, complex surgical specialties, transplantation and infectious diseases as well as London South Specialist Virology Centre at DH.

There is a 1:8 Microbiology on call commitment including weekends. 

 

Main duties of the job

To work under the supervision of the Consultant Microbiologists/Consultant in Infectious Diseases (alongside other Infection trainees and Clinical Fellows) in the provision of clinical, laboratory and other microbiological and infection consult services to King's College Hospital 

To work closely with Consultant Microbiologists/Consultant in Infectious Diseases to: 

  • provide day to day cover for the communication of important results to clinicians
  • deal with incoming calls and visits, including ID consults, for clinical advice (and document advise as required) 
  • discuss, as necessary, serious infections with a Consultant 
  • ensure that appropriate clinicians and Infection Control Team are made aware of all 'alter organisms' or possible clusters / outbreak of infection

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The provision of a comprehensive clinical Medical Microbiology and Infectious Disease service including advice regarding appropriate specimens, involvement in specimen analysis, validation and interpretation of results for transmission to clinicians, and involvement in the management of individual patients through full clinical liaison.

Work with the Infection Control Doctor, the Antimicrobial Stewardship Lead and the King's Infection Prevention and Control Team, the Laboratory Clinical Lead on the audit and control of HCAIs and antimicrobial stewardships at King's.

Provide cover for other Infection Control and Clinical Fellows periods of annual or study leave; reciprocal cover will be provided for the appointee.

Be involved in the training of medical and nursing staff, clinical scientists and biomedical scientists as required.   Contribute as required to the teaching of Medical Microbiology/Infectious Disease and Infection Control and AMS to under-graduates and post-graduates.

Qualifications & Registration

Essential criteria
  • Registerable medical qualification
  • Permission to work in the UK (i.e. appropriate visa and/or work permit)
  • [MRCP] or equivalent.
  • Full registration with GMC/GDC with Licence to Practice
Desirable criteria
  • Other higher degree or diploma (e.g Diploma of Tropical Medicine)

Training & Experience

Essential criteria
  • At least 6 months of experience in a Microbiology, Virology or Infectious Diseases post
Desirable criteria
  • Experience in aspects of Medical Microbiology, Infection Control and antimicrobial stewardship
  • Experience in Infectious Diseases

Administration, Management & Leadership

Essential criteria
  • Experience in day to day organisation of Microbiology, Infection Control services and Infectious Diseases services in a busy Teaching Hospital
  • Able to demonstrate leadership capability within multi-disciplinary teams
Desirable criteria
  • Familiar with current structure of Health Service and conversant with recent initiatives and changes
  • Management course and / or qualification

Audit, Quality Improvement, Teaching & Research

Essential criteria
  • Thorough understanding of principles of medical audit and quality improvement
  • Must have undertaken audit / QI project
Desirable criteria
  • Relevant research experience in one or more aspects of Medical Microbiology, Infection Control and Antimicrobial stewardship
  • Publication of relevant review articles or case reports
  • Experience of undergraduate and post-graduate teaching and exam preparation
  • Teaching skills course / qualification
