A opportunity has arisen for a registered nurse in our gynaecology department. We are looking for a caring and motivated nurse to join our team in a rotational post on Women’s Surgical Unit the inpatient ward and all our outpatient areas. 

This opportunity is for nurses who see themselves specialising in women’s health of the future, as a foundation or to build on your experience, with the opportunity to work and learn from the clinical nurse specialists in the department

The successful candidate will be given support to ensure that they meet the requirements of the post. It is expected that with support this post holder will gain experience across our range of clinics co-located in our outpatient area alongside our inpatient service. 

Main duties of the job

Women’s Surgical Unit is a 9 bed inpatient area caring for women undergoing elective & emergency gynaecological care. You will provide care for conditions including complications in early pregnancy and loss, abnormal bleeding, pelvic pain, endometriosis, suspected cancers, fertility issues, and other gynaecological conditions. You will work closely with the multidisciplinary team and support the senior nursing staff to ensure safe care of the highest quality. Often there is fast turnover of patients, so it is vital that you can build rapport and offer excellent communication skills to the women in your care.

 The Outpatient areas:

·         Early Pregnancy & Acute Gynaecology scanning unit a leading centre for the management of early pregnancy complications and outpatient care. Nursing staff are involved in range of care of women from telephone triage to follow up on discharge.

·         Colposcopy service is Consultant led with 3 nurse colposcopists providing examination and treatment for women with abnormal smears & who have signs and symptoms of pre-cancerous changes to their cervix.

·         Ambulatory Gynaecology Unit provides care for women requiring a range of diagnostic and minor surgical and medical procedures such as outpatient hysteroscopy, cystoscopy and day admissions for hyperemesis, linking the inpatient ward and Emergency Department to increase patient flow.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Delivering high quality, evidence-based and patient focused clinical care through:

 • Delivering a high standard of evidence-based care to patients.

• Ensuring good standards of care for the patient are maintained at all times.

• Involving and supporting patients, relatives, carers and friends in the care process.

• Ensuring clear and accurate written and verbal information is given at all times.

• Ensuring contemporaneous record keeping at all times.

• Seeking advice from more senior/experienced members of staff where appropriate.

Working effectively as part of the immediate team and wider multidisciplinary team (MDT) through:

• Liaising effectively with all members of the MDT to ensure patients’ needs are met.

• Exercising leadership and taking the initiative where appropriate.

• Providing support and advice to ward/unit staff (especially junior staff) on clinical and administrative issues.

• Liaising with discharge coordinator / bed manager to ensure effective admission/discharge of patients.

• Keeping the ward/unit sister / charge nurse informed of significant changes and/or anticipated problems.

Upholding a duty of care and clinical governance through:

• Observing a general duty of care for the health, safety and well-being of yourself, work colleagues, visitors and patients within the hospital.

• Ensuring the rules, policies, procedures and standards of Kings College Hospital NHS Trust Foundation together with all relevant statutory and professional obligations are adhered to at all times.

• Maintaining patient confidentiality, dignity and privacy at all times.

• Adhering to the Trust’s policy on valuing equality and diversity and showing due regard for each patient’s cultural and religious beliefs, gender, ethnicity, age and sexuality.
