Main duties of the job

The locum specialty doctor has a continuing responsibility for the care of patients in their charge, and for the proper functioning of the service. The post holder is expected to maintain an efficient service, maximizing use of theatre time and working flexibly to ensure the smooth running of the operating department.

 The post holder is expected to participate in clinical governance and audit, to meet annual training requirements, and to satisfy the annual requirement for continuous professional development set out by The Royal College of Anaesthetist. They will participate in the Trust’s appraisal scheme.

 Operating theatres are normally open between 08:00 to 18.00 weekdays and Saturdays

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The post is based at Moorfields Eye Hospital City Road and include work at satellites (St. Ann’s, Stratford, Northwick Park, Ealing, Potters Bar).

 

The post holder will be expected to work flexibly to facilitate service provision when colleagues are absent.  The lack of many services that would be found in a general hospital means that the anaesthetic service is more than usual relied upon for perioperative patient care in adults and children.

 

In addition to clinical duties, the new appointee would be expected to participate in departmental activities including management, teaching and audit.

Person specification

Education/Qualification

Essential criteria
  • • MB BS/MB BCh
  • • Primary FRCA or approved overseas equivalents
Desirable criteria
  • • Further postgraduate qualifications e.g. MRCP or diploma in Intensive care

Knowledge & Experience

Essential criteria
  • • 4 years full time postgraduate training or equivalent part time
  • • At least 2 years in relevant specialty training programme or equivalent experience
  • • Knowledge of anaesthesia and ability to deliver safe anaesthetic service in the operating theatre and intensive care unit
  • • Competent in preoperative, postoperative care and ongoing management of patients
  • • At least 6 months Previous NHS experience
Desirable criteria
  • • Knowledge of post-operative pain management

  • • Ability to work effectively as part of a team
  • • Ability to work alone whilst understanding own limitations and willingness to request assistance
