At Moorfields Eye Hospital, we believe that looking after our staff is just as important as looking after our patients. We are seeking a skilled and motivated Payroll Liaison Officer to ensure payroll runs smoothly and accurately across the Trust, directly supporting the experience of our dedicated staff.
We are looking for an experienced payroll advisor who is used to working with complex pay queries and prides themselves on providing an excellent level of customer service.
As the Payroll Liaison Officer, you will be the main point of contact between Moorfields and our external payroll provider (SBS) playing a vital role in ensuring timely and accurate payments for our staff, troubleshooting complex payroll issues, and leading process improvements to enhance payroll accuracy and efficiency.
This is a part time role (22.5hrs) to support our existing payroll liaison officer. There is a degree of flexibility on when the hours can be worked within the week as long as there is consistent support for any incoming payroll queries.
Main duties of the job
As the Payroll Liaison Officer, you will be the main point of contact between Moorfields and our external payroll provider (SBS) playing a vital role in ensuring timely and accurate payments for our staff, troubleshooting complex payroll issues, and leading process improvements to enhance payroll accuracy and efficiency.
As a key member of the team, you will work closely with HR, Finance, and operational teams, supporting everything from system administration (ESR, HealthRoster) to overpayment investigations, payroll analytics, and reporting. This is a hands-on role with real impact—ensuring our staff are paid correctly and on time, every time.
We are looking for someone who:
Has substantial experience working with NHS payroll systems, ESR, and outsourced payroll providers.
Brings expert knowledge of payroll procedures, NHS terms and conditions, and payroll legislation (PAYE, NI, SSP, SMP, etc.).
Has strong IT skills, particularly with ESR systems and advanced Excel (pivot tables, macros, conditional formatting).
Can analyse data, solve problems effectively, and communicate complex information clearly to diverse audiences.
Is highly organised, accurate, and thrives under pressure while meeting deadlines.

Essential criteria
- Educated to degree/post graduate diploma or equivalent work experience.
Desirable criteria
- IPPM qualified or equivalent knowledge and experience

- Substantial experience of working with an NHS payroll system and ESR
- Expert knowledge of payroll/HR systems preferably in the NHS or an outsourced provider to the NHS
- Experience of dealing with external/outsourced payroll providers.
- • Good working knowledge of payroll statutory requirements including PAYE NI contributions SMP SSP and Student loan repayments
Skills and Abilities
Essential criteria
- Expert knowledge of payroll procedures and processes
- Understanding of Public sector and Defined contribution pension schemes including auto enrolment rules.
- Ability to communicate effectively with tact and diplomacy often with staff and/or staff relatives in sensitive or distressing circumstances including face to-face, via e-mail, over the telephone and in writing.
