Job overview
This is an exciting opportunity for someone interested in taking on a service leadership role working directly with NHS England and shaping the development of an innovative, high quality regional service, while also continuing to provide direct clinical care to patients. This job provides invaluable experience of the NHSE commissioning process as well as clinical experience working with this interesting and complex patient group. Detailed job description and main responsibilities
• Assistance with diagnosis, medication reviews, management plans, risk assessments, crisis plans and self-help plans for patients with complex mental health problems.
• Work with Veterans service leads to develop a collaborative care model for patients with disorders falling within the remit of the team.
• Provide clinical assessments of patients as necessary.
• Provide follow up as necessary for clients within teams.
• Support MDT in their diagnosis, management and treatment of patients through case discussions, joint consultations supervision and bespoke training.
• Provide Consultant input and clinical leadership to London Veterans Mental Health and Wellbeing Service
• Provide Consultant input to triage system for referrals into the service
• Maintain effective communication with GPs, patients and their carers.
• To provide clinical input to multi-disciplinary case conferencing around complex patients.
• Provide clinical assessments and supervision to trainees.
• To engage with local service user and carer groups.
• To provide clinical and professional leadership and to participate in management activities and governance processes related to the post or the wider service in which it is embedded.
• To play an integral role in the performance of the team, the further development of the service, and the development of clinical pathways and priorities of the service line.
• To work within the MDT promoting respect for all professional groups and focusing upon coherent and integrated teamwork.
• Other management/clinical supporting activity (to be negotiated as required by the Trust.)
• The post holder will be Section 12(2) approved and have approved clinician status. They will participate in the Trust-wide Section 12 daytime rota and will act as RC/AC for patients on Community Treatment Order in the service.
• Appropriate flexibility within timetabled working hours is anticipated for urgent clinical matters.
• To carry out Mental Health Act and domiciliary assessments as required.
• To provide second opinions for Consultant colleagues if requested.
• To support Clinical Governance projects, particularly audits projects in service line plan.
• To keep up with administration, including clustering, entering diagnoses and risk assessments on the electronic patient record system.
• To assist with Serious Incident investigations and complaints if requested.
• To keep up to date with mandatory training.
Person specification
Education/Qualifications/Registration
Essential criteria
- Full registration with the General Medical Council (GMC) and a license to practice. Must be on the specialist register or within 6 months of gaining a Certificate of Completion of Training in General Adult Psychiatry
- Membership of Royal College of Psychiatrists or equivalent higher qualification in psychiatry
- Section 12(2) and Approved Clinician status (or eligibility) - qualifies to act as a Responsible Clinician
- Registered with Royal College of Psychiatrists CPD programme and in good standing
Desirable criteria
- Other relevant post-graduate qualification
- Training up to date to be an approved trainer/clinical supervisor in line with GMC recognition and approval of trainers which is overseen by the LETB
- Trained as an Educational Supervisor for doctors in training
- Training as a Consultant mentor
Knowledge & Experience
Essential criteria
- Knowledge and observance of the requirements and duties of a doctor laid down by the GMC in Good Medical Practice
- Clinical knowledge of the full range mental disorders including those which occur in military personnel/Veterans.
- Ability to assess and treat psychiatric problems in military personnel/Veterans.
- Ability to assess and treat trauma related presentations and to deal with crisis situations
- Ability to advise on the use of psychotropic medication.
- Experience in the assessment and treatment of complex clinical cases involving severe and enduring mental illness and significant risk histories and the ability to assertively engage and manage such cases.
- Expertise in a comprehensive range of evidence based treatment and case management options including pharmacotherapy.
- Knowledge of the Mental Health Act, Mental Capacity Act and safeguarding practices
- Experience in work place based assessments of doctors in training
- Good understanding of Trust governance structures, especially clinical governance
- An understanding of the role of research within the wider service
- Willingness to participate in research as appropriate and within the context of the duties of the post
Desirable criteria
- Experience in teaching small and large groups
- Experience in developing policies and protocols.
- Experience of service development.
Skills & Abilities
Essential criteria
- Ability to practise as an independent Consultant Psychiatrist.
- Thoroughness and attention to detail in clinical matters
- Sensitivity to needs of all patients and carers.
- Sensitivity and awareness in clients and staff from different cultures, ethnicities, gender and sexual orientations.
- Teaching and supervision skills for undergraduate medical students, doctors in training and multi-professional staff
- Ability to work in a team environment and to develop effective working relationships on an individual and multidisciplinary basis with all levels of staff.
- Ability to take on the role and responsibilities of the clinical lead
- Experience in undertaking clinical audit, investigating serious incidents and handling complaints
- Enthusiasm for the subject of the impact of trauma on military personnel/Veterans and willingness to share knowledge and experience
Desirable criteria
- A special interest or willingness to develop one in an area which helps to meet the needs of the Trust
- Experience in successfully delivering research projects
