Job overview

The position is designed as 1.0WTE however applicants wishing to work part time will also be considered. Applicants must be on the General Medical Council Specialist Register (UK) with a License to Practice (or be eligible for full and Specialist registration within six months of interview).

The post holder will join 4 other Consultants in Clinical Biochemistry. The unified team are responsible for chemical pathology services across North Central London with individual consultants having responsibility for the different sites. The department includes a well-established tertiary lipid service with expertise in Clinical Trials and active in research. There are opportunities to support our large FH service supported by a Clinical Nurse Specialist who runs the cascade testing service. The person appointed will have broad training in Clinical Biochemistry and be capable of handling complex lipid patients as well as the Familial Hypercholesterolaemia service. Some experience in genomic medicine is desired to assist in setting up a FH registry.  There are also opportunities to support and further the development of clinical trials.

The postholder will also provide Clinical Leadership for Clinical Biochemistry services at Whittington Health NHS Trust. The Whittington pathology laboratory services are in the process of transferring to Health Services Laboratories (HSL). It is anticipated that one day per week will be based at the Whittington Hospital

Person specification

Education, Qualifications and Specialist Skills

Essential criteria
  • MBBS or other recognized equivalent medical qualification.
  • Full and Specialist registration (and with a license to practice) with the General Medical Council (GMC) or be eligible for registration within 6 months of interview.
  • Applicants that are UK trained must ALSO be a holder of a Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) or be within six months of award of CCT by date of interview
  • Applicants that are non-UK trained they will be required to show evidence of equivalence to the UK CCT.
  • Entry onto the GMC Specialist Register for Chemical pathology and Metabolic Medicine, (or for UK trainees entry expected within 6 months from the date of the CCT.
  • MRCP or show evidence of equivalent training and experience.
  • FRCPath or show evidence of equivalent training and experience.
Desirable criteria
  • A higher academic degree (e.g. PhD or MD).
  • Leadership and training experience.

Clinical Experience

Essential criteria
  • Evidence of thorough and broad training and experience in Clinical Biochemistry and Metabolic Medicine.
  • Experience and training in managing metabolic clinics.
  • Ability to offer an expert clinical opinion within the speciality.
Desirable criteria
  • Evidence of experience in Specialist areas that complement that of other consultants within the department

Management and Administration

Essential criteria
  • Ability to run a service and participate in management process.
  • Ability to author and review clinical guidelines.
  • Able to communicate well with patients, clinical colleagues, colleagues in Laboratory Medicine and support staff.
  • An understanding of Clinical Governance
  • Committed to share in professional, managerial, and teaching responsibilities necessary to fulfil the obligations of the Directorate to the Trust and its workforce.
  • Flexible approach to service delivery and committed approach to development.
Desirable criteria
  • Evidence of leadership / project management.
  • Experience in developing and implementing new technologies.

Teaching

Essential criteria
  • Experience of supervising junior scientific and medical staff.
  • Experience of participation in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching
  • Ability to teach clinical skills.
Desirable criteria
  • Postgraduate qualification in medical education.

Research

Essential criteria
  • Evidence of involvement in and understanding of research methodology and publication of findings.
  • Research/critical review of literature.
Desirable criteria
  • Higher degree. Publications in the last two years as first author.

Personal Attributes

  • Evidence of good leadership, organisational and management skills.
  • Ability to communicate effectively
  • A commitment to personal / unit CPD
Desirable criteria
  • Experience of leadership within the Laboratory medicine clinical environment.
