Job overview
This is a full-time consultant post to join the vascular surgery department at the Royal Free London NHS Foundation Trust. The Vascular Unit at the Royal Free London has a renowned reputation for providing world-class specialist care for the full range of vascular diseases and is the hub of the North Central London Vascular Network. The Royal Free Vascular Unit is also a national tertiary referral for complex aortic diseases, lower limb arterial pathologies, neurovascular disorders, vascular malformations, and paediatric vascular surgery (in partnership with the Great Ormond Street Hospital).
Main duties of the job
The post holder would be expected to be involved in all aspects of patient care including, but not exhaustively, (a) be part of the Vascular Surgical Consultant On-call rota, and to manage general vascular emergencies including acute limb ischaemia and severe peripheral arterial disease,
ruptured infra-renal abdominal aortic aneurysm and carotid artery disease.
(b) maintain and augment the excellence of the Unit in the vascular care of patients with multiple clinical comorbidities, including advanced cardiac and renal disease.
(c) a preparedness to join the paediatric vascular service.
This postholder will join the RFL consultant body and will be expected to be part of the vascular multi-disciplinary team and be able to perform a full range of vascular procedures, both emergency and elective. The successful applicant must have some vascular interventional experience.
This post will have on-call duties for general vascular patients, and will join the general on call rota, for vascular surgery (surgeon of the week) at the Royal Free. Elective practice will be on both the Royal Free and the spoke sites.
The post holder will be expected to undertake activities for the management of acute and ward based patient care, as well as undertaking clinics, with active participation in the weekly multidisciplinary team (MDT) meetings.

Education & professional Qualifications
Essential criteria
- • On the specialist register of the General Medical Council (GMC) for Vascular Surgery (or General Surgery with a subspecialty interest in Vascular Surgery); or registered with the GMC and within 6 months (at the scheduled time of the advisory appointments committee) of being accepted for the specialist register
- • Fellowship of a Royal College of Surgeons of the United Kingdom or Ireland, or equivalent
Desirable criteria
- • Postgraduate medical degree
- • Completion of a Management course
Experience / Knowledge
Essential criteria
- • Evidence of participation in clinical audit and an understanding of the role of audit in improving medical practice
- • Experience of Clinical guideline development
Desirable criteria
- • Comprehensive training in general vascular surgery in dedicated units
- • Wide range of knowledge and experience of vascular surgery
