Job overview

National and Specialist CAMHS are seeking to recruit a full-time band 7 clinical specialist to join the N&S Paediatric liaison service. We would welcome applications from nurses, occupational therapists and psychologists. There are two main components to the role: 
•    Providing specialist assessment and intervention across the generic CAMHS Liaison team. 
•    Providing embedded psychological support to children and young people under the Paediatric Sickle Cell & Thalassaemia Team at Evelina Children’s hospital/ St Thomas’ Hospital.

The Paediatric Liaison services provide specialist treatment to children (0-18), presenting with mental health difficulties in the context of physical illness and those presenting with variety of functional symptoms. It also provides urgent assessments to children and young people presenting in crisis. 

The Paediatric Haematology Service provides care and treatment for children (0-18 years) with sickle cell disease & thalassaemia. Services for children with red cell disorders are well established at the hospital. 

Main duties of the job

To provide a specialist mental health assessment and intervention to children and young people, presenting to St Thomas’s hospital on an inpatient and outpatient basis. To provide urgent assessments for children and young people presenting to A&E and paediatric wards with acute mental health difficulties.  Working collaboratively with another mental health clinician to provide embedded psychological support to children and young people under the Paediatric Sickle Cell & Thalassaemia Team at Evelina Children’s hospital/ St Thomas’ Hospital.

The team is based at St Thomas hospital, a short walk from Waterloo station and Westminster station.

Flexible working:
As one of the few Trusts in London we are proud to offer flexible working as part of our new ways of working, and we are happy to talk flexible working at the interview stage. In this role typical hours are Monday to Friday, 9am -5pm, however we would be happy to discuss alternative times frames where feasible. (However, this may include working early mornings, later evenings or Saturdays as part of the core working hours/working pattern for this post)

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Key aspects of role include: 
•    To provide, develop and ensure the systematic provision of a specialist psychology service/ mental health support in a subspecialty of paediatric liaison; patients under the care of the Paediatric Sickle Cell & Thalassaemia service at Evelina Children’s Hospital/ St Thomas hospital.  
•    To provide specialist assessment, formulation and evidence-based intervention for children and adolescents their families.
•    You will manage your own caseload and provide specialist support to families with complex presentations 

Person specification

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • First level nursing qualification/registration RMN or RSCN or HV or First level qualification in OT, social work, or equivalent with related CAMHS experience or first level qualification in art, play, drama or music therapy with related experience in the psychological aspects of caring for children and adolescent with mental health problems/needs, developmental/ learning disability problems. Or Doctoral level qualification in clinical or counselling psychology or equivalent (A/I)
  • All applicants will require professional registration with a statutory body: the Nursing Midwifery Council, General Social care council, Health professional's council, Chartered Clinical Psychologists by BPS, ACP or UKCP (A/I)
Desirable criteria
  • Management qualification, management training course completion (A/I)
  • MSc or PhD qualification in a research area relevant to child and adolescent mental health (A/I)

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Evidence of having worked as a clinical specialist under supervision. (A/I)
  • Working knowledge of professional systems involved in work with children both in specialist hospital and community settings. (A/I)
Desirable criteria
  • Line management experience (A/I)
  • Experience in delivering therapeutic groups with young people and their families (A/I)

Knowledge/Skills

Essential criteria
  • Knowledge of the theory and practice of specialised therapeutic intervention for children and adolescents with mental health needs (A/I)
  • Evidence of continuing training/professional development (A/I)
  • Awareness of racial diversity issues through attendance of relevant training. (A/I)
  • Skills in the use of methods of psychological assessments and intervention in a specialist area. (A/I)
  • Skills in providing teaching and training to other professional groups (A/I)
Desirable criteria
  • Knowledge of the theory and practice of specialised psychological assessment and interventions for children with chronic health conditions (A/I)
  • Ability to conduct complex assessments and to formulate an appropriate treatment hierarchy of needs (A/I)
  • Strong ability to assess and manage risk and to liaise appropriately with the multi-disciplinary team. (A/I)
