          Accountable to:           Chief Nurse

 

Please note that a Bachelors Degree in Nursing is a mandatory requirement for this role in order to obtain a license to practice in the UAE.

Main duties of the job

The Ward Manager has overall responsibility for the safe and effective delivery of care within the ward, in line with organisational policies, local regulations, and international best practice.

 

The post-holder will:

·       Lead, support, and develop the nursing team to deliver high-quality, evidence-based care.

·       Oversee clinical standards, operational management, and effective use of resources.

·       Promote a culture of safety, patient-centred care and multidisciplinary collaboration.

·       Uphold the reputation of Maudsley Health, MACANI, and South London & Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust through professional leadership and exemplary practice.

Maudsley Health is now progressing significant developments across the spectrum of mental health care in the Middle East. The aim is to replicate the high quality of the specialist services within SLaM. As a result, we are looking for additional experienced, high-quality nursing staff. Detailed job description and main responsibilities

3. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

 

Management of Nursing Care and Practice

 

·       Ensure that all nursing practice is developed using up-to-date evidence-based practice, and that staff are supported to maintain the appropriate knowledge and skills for the service user group.

·       Oversee service users’ care pathways, ensuring effective resource utilization and leading the team in implementation.

·       Promote a culture of compassionate, trauma informed and least restrictive care, ensuring safety, dignity, and recovery-focused approaches to care.

·       Ensure systems are in place to support patient and carer-centred involvement in ward activities.

·       Ensure all service users are informed about, encouraged, and assisted to access available services, especially community-based resources.

·       Ensure compliance with all local mental health legislation, the new UAE Mental Health Law, and safeguarding principles in line with statutory and policy requirements.

·       Lead on clinical governance initiatives, audits, and incident reviews to support continuous improvement.

·       Monitor and report key performance indicators (KPIs) including bed occupancy, length of stay, incidents, and patient satisfaction.

·       Uphold infection prevention and control standards across the ward.

·       Ensure safe staffing levels with escalation procedures in place.

·       Respond effectively to complaints and feedback from patients and families.

 

Leadership and Staff Management

 

·       Ensure nursing staff receive regular supervision, appraisal, and essential/developmental training in line with their personal development plans and service needs.

·       Provide visible, accessible, and supportive leadership to promote a positive and professional culture.

·       Promote staff engagement, wellbeing and retention.

·       Facilitate multi-disciplinary team (MDT) working, ensuring effective communication and collaboration across all professional groups.

·       Role model high professional standards, ethical behaviour, and compassionate care.

·       Support workforce planning, recruitment, and induction of new staff.

·       All absences and duty hours are managed as per the organisation’s policy.

·       Oversee team compliance with health and safety, fire safety, BLS and other mandatory training requirements.

·       Maintain the efficient use of staffing resources on the ward, ensuring that staffing levels are safe, appropriate and contain the necessary skill mix on each shift.

·       Drive a culture of continuous improvement and accountability, ensuring lessons learned inform practice development.

·       Implement all the local HR policies, and ensure staff are aware of how to access this information.

·       Delegate duties and responsibilities to other staff as appropriate to assist in the operation of the unit and to aid the development of individual staff.

 

 

Management of Financial and Material Resources

 

       Ensure ward finances are managed within allocated budget, including recruitment of staff.

       Communicate to all staff how they can contribute to the efficient management of financial and material resources.

       Identify and escalate financial pressures where necessary.

 

 

Management of Clinical Standards

 

       Set, monitor, and maintain standards of professional behaviour and compassionate, person-centred care, in collaboration with the CAG Service Manager and CAG Clinical Director.

       Ensure compliance with DOH standards and Joint Commission International (JCI) accreditation standards.

       Ensure that all practices and interactions on the unit are based on the preservation and respect of service users’ dignity, individual and cultural identity, wishes (whenever possible) and are in accordance with the maintenance of individuals’ independence.

       Ensure that all staff are aware of the standards of professional behaviour expected on the unit by the organisation through the use of role modelling and the promotion of reflective practice.

       Ensure that the service provides continuity out of hours, appropriately relating to the senior manager on-call and out of hours medical team.

       Work closely with the multidisciplinary team and involve them in all relevant day to day decisions, strategy and business planning, and maintain close liaison with the CAG Service Manager and CAG Clinical Director.

 

 

Management of Information and Communication

 

       Develop and maintain procedures which result in good communication between the multidisciplinary team and other agencies.

       Arrange and in some instances chair relevant meetings involving other agencies, patients and carers when necessary to facilitate good communication.

       Attend meetings and forums, representing the ward at various levels both within the organisation and with external agencies, ensuring that all staff are kept fully briefed on any new developments etc.

       Ensure that all communication (verbal or written) between the ward and other departments or agencies is of a high standard both in its content and presentation.

       Ensure that all written and electronically stored information is accessible only to authorised personnel and is stored in accordance with local policy and procedures.

       Oversee collection and reporting of data to support service monitoring and improvement.

 

Management of the Environment

 

       Ensure that the ward environment adheres to relevant standards at all times. This will involve monitoring the services provided by other departments in accordance with the adopted procedures and will involve liaison with the Facilities Department and other relevant personnel.

       Ensure that the Health and Safety is adhered to by all staff. The post-holder will be responsible for taking immediate action to deal with any problem which might affect service user, visitor or staff safety.

       Ensure local response in managing incidents by using the organisation incident policy and implementation outcomes

       Ensure that learning from incidents are disseminated to the team to ensure improvement within the service delivery.

 

 

 

Personal Development

 

The post-holder will:

       Be prepared to physically move between sites as needed.

       Ensure that they are fully aware of current developments and practice in their clinical area.

       Acknowledge their own limitations and discuss/identify their training and development needs with their line manager.

       Make effective use of supervision with their line manager on a regular and agreed basis.

       Be aware of the need to reflect on their practice both as clinician and manager.

       Manage their own time efficiently.

       Be aware of and adhere to all Policies and Procedures and act as a role model to other staff.

       Meet the requirements for Standards of Professional Practice, Code of Conduct.

Experience

  • • Significant years’ experience of managing clinical practice at Band 6 in a mental health setting.
