Job overview

The post holder will be a Family Therapist responsible for assessing and treating a range of mental health and significant behavioural difficulties in children and young people whom are referred to the team. 

You will carry out risk assessments with children & young people and their families routinely and work under the supervision of the team manager and senior Family Therapist to manage these situations effectively.

You will be part of the daily duty rota for the service, which involves screening and managing new referrals, telephone queries and supporting the team where necessary.

You will work with other CAMHS practitioners in the service from all disciplines. You will be a member of a number of internal and external professional networks to ensure that care plans for individual children and services across agencies are co-ordinated efficiently and effectively. This post is a clinical post and the expectation is that 60% of your time is spent in clinical practice.  

The Team hold smaller caseloads due to high levels of risk and complexity, there is supervision and MDT to help manage the work. 

Main duties of the job

This role is for the Adolescent Treatment Team, this is a specialist team within Lewisham CAMHS, who provide stabilisation, formulation treatment and discharge to high-risk complex mental health presentations for children in Lewisham.

The successful candidate will be a Family Therapist responsible for assessing and treating a range of mental health and significant behavioural difficulties in children and young people whom are referred to the team. 

They will carry out risk assessments with children & young people and their families routinely and work under the supervision of the team manager and Principle Family Therapist to manage these situations effectively. They will also be part of the daily duty rota for the service, which involves screening and managing new referrals, telephone queries and supporting the team where necessary.

If successful you will work with other CAMHS practitioners in the service from all disciplines. You will be a member of several internal and external professional networks including Family Therapy Clinics to ensure that care plans for individual children and services across agencies are co-ordinated efficiently and effectively. This post is mostly client facing to manage the high risk and complex presentations of the young people.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

  • Participate as a multi-disciplinary team member in the setting and reviewing of therapeutic aims, objectives, standards and strategies to provide a high standard of care to clients. 
  • To provide Family Therapy interventions to a small number of children and families with complex mental health problems. 
  • To ensure that all recording and reporting of client contact is accurate, up to date and of good quality and within CAMHS & professional requirement standards of record keeping. 
  • To collect & collate information about individual clinical activity on ePJS.
  • Work with the team and clients to maintain a safe therapeutic environment.
  • Work to assure the quality of care through achieving high operational standards in clinical systems.
  • To maintain and ensure good professional standards and attitudes towards the care and treatment of children, young people and their families.
  • To link with other statutory and voluntary agencies and professionals as well as other CAMHS Teams in terms of referrals and joint work.
  •  Maintain good relationships and clear lines of communication with other professional agencies and departments, providing specialist advice and support where appropriate.
  • Contribute to the effective functioning of the team and service through attendance at relevant meetings, taking responsibilities within the service as appropriate and negotiated with the line manager. 
  • Supervise junior members of the team (Band 5 - 6) or trainees from any discipline. 

Person specification

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • • Post-graduate qualification in relevant mental health/social welfare profession and demonstrable practice in this field (A/I/)
  • • Masters level qualification in Family and systemic Psychotherapy or equivalent qualification accredited by UKCP (A/I/)
  • • Registered with the UKCP as Systemic Psychotherapist (A/I/)
Desirable criteria
  • • Other relevant qualifications linked to CAMHS practice such as Attachment Based Family Therapy/Diploma in Family Interventions for Psychosis.

Experience

Essential criteria
  • • Experience of assessment and treatment of clients with a range of psychological needs of a complex nature in CAMHS. (A/I/)
  • • Experience of receiving clinical supervision across a range of client needs. (A/I/)
  • • Experience of working with, and addressing issues of, diversity (I)
Desirable criteria
  • • Experience of developing and carrying out research projects. (A/I/)

Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • • High level knowledge of the theory and practice of family and systemic psychotherapy, relevant to CAMHS (A/I)
  • • Theoretical knowledge of psychopathology and the evidence base for the relevant treatment (A/I)
  • • Knowledge of a range of systemic models in assessment and treatment, including specific family and systemic theories and evidence base (A/I)
  • • Knowledge of legislation in relation to the client group and mental health issues and child protection. (A/I)
Desirable criteria
  • • MSc level knowledge of research methodology and complex statistical analysis. (A/I)

Skills

Essential criteria
  • • To communicate skillfully and sensitively complex and sensitive information with clients, carers and colleagues overcoming sensory, emotional, and cultural barriers to communication. (A/I)
  • • To be skilled in systemic assessment techniques including use of genograms, eco-maps, mapping interaction patterns, assessment of relationship to help of clients etc (A/I)
  • • Skills in working with, and sensitively managing, several people’s needs simultaneously within the context of therapeutic work/consultation (A/I)
