At Synnovis, we are committed to maintaining the highest standards of health and safety. We are seeking a dedicated and experienced Health & Safety Officer to join our team. This role is pivotal in ensuring compliance with all health and safety legislation, fostering a culture of safety excellence, and driving continuous improvement across all our operations.

The key purpose of this role is to support SYNLAB Head of Health & Safety in ensuring the organisation meets the requirements of all current and relevant health and safety legislation, through the implementation of the Occupational Environment Health & Safety (OEH&S) management system by shaping culture, policies, standards, guidance, and process improvements to ensure compliance with HSE legislation and other applicable regulations, and supporting the Environmental, Social, Governance (ESG) green pillar with regards to OEH&S.

 

With the underpinning directive of delivering SYNLAB’s safety culture and management system, this role will be central to ensuring compliance and risk management and ensure a culture of continuous safety improvement within Synnovis and across the wider businesses.

The Health & Safety department plays a key role in supporting the delivery of Pathology and diagnostic services, consisting of seven members of staff. The Synnovis team is based at our corporate office, with regular attendance to hospital sites, wider SYNLAB businesses and the ability to work remotely on occasion.

As the Health & Safety Officer, you will work closely with SYNLAB Head of Health & Safety, Synnovis and SYNLAB Health & Safety Teams, and play a central role in:

·       Ensuring regulatory compliance with current health and safety legislation and regulations.

·       Conducting generic and specialized risk assessments, incident investigations, and audits.

·       Supporting the delivery of training programs and providing guidance on health and safety matters to internal stakeholders.

·       Supporting the delivery and implementation of Occupational, Environmental, Health, and Safety (OEH&S) management system

·       Supporting the environmental ESG green pillar in relation to OEH&S.

·       Promoting and championing a positive OEH&S culture

·       Ensuring the implementation of risk assessments, COSHH assessments, and safe systems of work in collaboration with internal stakeholders.

·      Support and travel to the wider UK&I businesses to deliver H&S agenda including Synnovis, Pathology First, Southwest Pathology Services, Lextox Drugs & Alcohol, Synlab Laboratory Services, The Christie Pathology Partnership, Corporate offices

Currently our offices are based in Paris Garden, Blackfriars SE1, or Francis House, Southwark SE1 however at present these are temporary locations. We expect to move to new offices in the Hub building located in Blackfriars in 2024.

Core Duties:

Support SYNLAB Head of Health & Safety:

·       The implementation of the health and safety strategy, health, and safety management system, and associated key performance indicators

·       Providing appropriate support, guidance and management of Health and Safety processes within the organisation

·       Performing regular audits of the Health and Safety Management System and compliance with Health and Safety legislation

·       Providing appropriate assurance and reports in relation to Health and Safety elements of ISO45001, ISO14001, ISO15189 and other regulations

·       Ensuring Health and Safety related incidents are reported and investigated appropriately and the creation / distribution of OEH&S alerts, lessons learnt and action plans

·       Attending local site Health and Safety Committee meetings where appropriate and to chair/take minutes where necessary

·       Attend any other meetings as required

·       Attending and supporting laboratories during external inspection visits and providing reports for the business i.e., Health and Safety Executive and Environment Agency

·       Performing generic H&S and workplace assessments across the business i.e., manual handling, DSE, repetitive movement, and consider how risks can be reduced

·       Outline safe operational procedures which identify and consider all relevant hazards

·       Carry out regular site inspections to check policies and procedures are being properly implemented

·       Keep up to date with new legislation and maintain a working knowledge of all Health and Safety Executive (HSE) legislation and any developments that affect the organisation

·       Advise on a range of specialist areas, e.g., fire regulations, hazardous substances, noise, safeguarding machinery and occupational diseases

·       The post-holder will support the H&S Officer/Training Coordinator in the delivery of mandatory H&S and job specific training across all sites, reviewing the training curriculum and facilitate as required, any identified in-house training sessions in conjunction with legislative requirements

·       Multisite support and travel expected to deliver H&S agenda across SYNLAB organisations including Synnovis, Pathology First, Southwest Pathology Services, Lextox Drugs & Alcohol, Synlab Laboratory Services, The Christie Pathology Partnership, Corporate offices

 

Skills and Knowledge

·       Degree-level education or equivalent professional experience.

·       NEBOSH National General Certificate or equivalent certification.

·       Strong knowledge of current health and safety risk management legislation.

·       Demonstrated safety experience in a laboratory environment.

·       Experience in supporting delivery of ISO45001 and ISO14001 accreditation.

·       Proficiency in auditing, accident investigation, root cause analysis, COSHH, and risk assessment tools.

·       Experience delivering health and safety training.

·       Excellent communication skills.

·       Proficiency in Microsoft Office.

·       Ability to work both autonomously and effectively as part of a wider team.

·       Strong prioritization and workload management skills.

·       Flexibility, self-motivation, confidence, and initiative.

·       Willingness to travel to multiple sites to support the health and safety agenda.
