  • Analyse: use world-class science and data analytics to assess and continually monitor threats to health, identifying how best to control and mitigate the risks
  • Respond: take rapid, collaborative and effective actions nationally and locally to mitigate threats to health when they materialise
  • Lead: lead strong and sustainable global, national, regional and local partnerships designed to save lives, protect the nation from public health threats and reduce inequalities.

Job overview

A Senior Private Secretary’s primary role is to make things happen. Supporting the CDO (Chief Data Officer), you are the person that enables them to do their jobs effectively and this role provide an opportunity to see how decision making happens at the top of the organisation. This is a pivotal and demanding role within the organisation.

You will be advising the CDO l in relation to everything in your portfolio area. You will also be working with Ministers, the senior UKHSA team, and colleagues across the organisation and government.  

The portfolio will potentially cover areas such as: Cyber Security, Data Operation, Workforce, Office Management, Incident Management, Surveillance, and line management of the diary manager.

Main duties of the job

  • Support the CDO through delivery of effective and efficient private office duties, including correspondence, drafting briefings, action management, communications, and portfolio delivery 
  • Take a key role in driving portfolio work and, ensuring coherence across the senior leadership team, business areas, customers, and stakeholders 
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with the executive leadership of UKHSA and their private offices to collectively drive forward work, understand risks and help deliver operationally 
  • Develop a trusted relationship with DHSC ministerial private offices, Cabinet Office, and others to manage high-profile and fast paced work 
  • Develop a team culture and environment of continuous improvement that supports the wider organisation to deliver

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Essential criteria -

You will be assessed on the below seven essential criteria, which have been selected from the Job Description Document.

  • Extensive experience with health policy or with-in a private secretary role
  • Ability to work at pace and take initiative on a range of competing priorities, whilst remaining calm under pressure and demonstrating resilience. 
  • Ability to work flexibly and quickly develop expertise on new policy areas, with ability to exercise judgement often working with incomplete or inconclusive information and data
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to influence and motivate people at all levels, building trust with stakeholders to achieve goals
  • A proven commitment to promoting and driving an inclusive workplace culture in your teams and beyond
  • A proven track record of making a strong personal impact, demonstrating effectiveness and credibility to operate at a senior level
  • Excellent judgement and highly developed policy and strategic analysis skills.

Hybrid London Canary Wharf

This role is being offered as hybrid working based at our Core HQ in London. We offer great flexible working opportunities at UKHSA and operate using a hybrid working model where business needs allow. This provides us with greater flexibility about how and where we work, to 
get the best from our workforce.

As a hybrid worker, you will be expected to spend a minimum of 60% of your contractual working hours (approximately 3 days a week pro rata, (averaged over a month).

Our core HQ offices are modern and newly refurbished with excellent city centre transport link and benefit from benefit from co-location with other government departments such as the Department for Health and Social Care (DHSC).

Security Clearance Level Requirement

Successful candidates must pass a disclosure and barring security check.

Successful candidates will require Basic Personnel Security Standard (BPSS) as a minimum with willingness and capability to work towards Security Check (SC), with in 3 months of being in post, failure to achieve this may lead to termination of employment.

You should normally have been resident in the United Kingdom for the 5 years to obtain Security Check (SC) clearance. 

UK residency less than the outlined periods may not necessarily bar you from gaining national security vetting at this higher level and applicants should contact the Vacancy Holder / Recruiting Manager listed in the advert for further advice.
