Job overview

Specialty Doctor in in Complex Epilepsy
Applications are welcomed for a 12 month fixed term appointment which is extendable to 2 years. The post is aimed at candidates who have obtained or are close to obtaining Neurology or Neurophysiology CCT or equivalent, and is an excellent opportunity to get further training in clinical epilepsy, video EEG telemetry including intracranial EEG, and also deepen their experience of presurgical assessment of patients with medically refractory epilepsy.

The post will be based mainly on the Jules Thorne Telemetry Unit, at the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery. This is a seven bedded unit with fully integrated state-of-the art digital video and EEG recording capability. We perform diagnostic cases, sleep studies and epilepsy surgery evaluation, receiving referrals from both local neurologists and tertiary cases from the UK. Up to 600 patients are investigated each year at NHNN, of those, approximately 180 are investigated for presurgical evaluation, including scalp and intracranial recordings and 200 with sleep studies.

Main duties of the job

The successful candidate will be expected to carry out telemetry ward work, attend epilepsy clinics, undertake reporting of scalp and intracranial EEG studies, under Consultant supervision and participate and present cases in Multidisciplinary meetings with the Epilepsy Surgery Team. Training will be provided in EEG reporting. They will also gain experience of other non-invasive presurgical investigations such as ictal SPECT and PET.

There are numerous educational opportunities in the weekly timetable including weekly Neurophysiology and Telemetry departmental teaching, the Gowers round, and attendance at the weekly Epilepsy Surgery MDT. The appointee will also be expected to participate in departmental audit. The department has a strong ethos of research and the fellow will be encouraged to take part in a research project.
