Applications are invited for the post of a Locum Consultant Spine Neurosurgeon to join the team at the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery, Queen Square, a site of UCLH, a major London teaching hospital, which is also part of the academic health science partnership UCL Partners. Applications from both senior trainees and established consultants are welcome.

This is a fixed term post and not expected to be linked to a substantive appointment.

The clinical remit is simple spinal pathologies.

The post holder must be committed to high quality patient care, innovative service models, delivery of performance targets, advancement of knowledge through research, and excellence in education/training.

Main duties of the job

Main duties of the job
The post holder will be expected to have completed Neurosurgical training and experience in performing surgeries for simple degenerative cervical and lumbar pathology is essential.

A Fellowship in Spine at a recognised institution or additional equivalent experience in this field is desirable.

The post holder will be a key member of the Neurosurgical Department and will be required to participate in audits within the department, including regular reviews of mortality and morbidity. You will be required to work with the current neurosurgeons as a team, which will include covering operating sessions to ensure the theatre lists are used every week throughout the year.

Candidates should have the ability to run and manage spine and neurosurgical clinics and be able to supervise trainees. Candidates must be able to demonstrate experience in managing a variety of neurosurgical conditions and procedures.

The postholder could be part of the Neurosurgical on call rota, depending on the needs of the department.

Candidates must be eligible for full GMC registration; and either be already on or eligible to be on the Specialist Register for Neurosurgery.

Qualifications/ Education

Essential criteria
  • FRCS or equivalent Neurosurgery training
Desirable criteria
  • Higher degree / diploma relevant to Neurosurgery/ spinal surgery

Professional/ Statutory Registration

Essential criteria
  • GMC Specialist Register for Neurosurgery or within 3 months attainment of CCT

Previous experience

Essential criteria
  • Ability run and manage simple spine surgery clinics
  • Surgical management of simple degenerative spinal conditions
  • Completion of Fellowship in Spinal Neurosurgery or equivalent experience in spinal surgery
  • Broad range of experience and proven ability in simple spine surgery
  • Experience of performing endoscopic spine surgery
  • Ability to manage all simple spinal emergencies.
  • Evidence of operative experience in simple degenerative spine pathology supported by comprehensive records
Desirable criteria
  • Previous NHS Neurosurgery Consultant level experience
  • Experience of spinal fixation techniques

Skills/Knowledge/ Ability

Essential criteria
  • Ability to advise on efficient and smooth running of specialist service
  • Ability to organise and manage specialist service including outpatient referrals, surgical waiting lists and operating lists
  • Ability to teach clinical and operative skills
  • Experience of supervising SHOs and SpRs
  • Author of publications in high impact factor peer-reviewed journals.
  • Ability to work in a multidisciplinary team.
  • Enquiring, critical approach to work
  • Good interpersonal skills
  • Caring attitude to patients
  • Ability to communicate effectively with patients, relatives, nurses, GP’s and other agencies
