Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The post holder will work with the wider primary care programme team to agree and deliver priorities for primary care cancer in Camden and across NCL. This will include but not be limited to:
• Support the development of cancer in the local neighbourhood health agenda. Identify opportunities to link in with local neighbourhood structures (e.g. Integrators, Integrated Neighbourhood Teams).
• Support the primary care cancer and screening agenda including access/ pathway issues / delivery of services/ reducing unwarranted variation
• Support the NHS England 2026-27 cancer priorities for primary care, which include improving referral practice for suspected bowel, lung, and upper GI cancers
• Support PCNs and practices to achieve compliance with DES/QOF
• Share cancer related data (e.g. data packs) with PCNs and practices. Use data to facilitate conversations around improvement.
• Identify issues in the primary care elements of cancer and non-cancer pathways (e.g. reviewing pathways)
• Promote and support practices with new pathways and initiatives (e.g. FIT, Cancer Practice Recognition Award, breast pain pathway)
• Drive and facilitate a primary care cancer community of practice across the borough/place
• Attend NCL Primary Care Delivery Group and other key forums (e.g. catchups) as required
• Drive the delivery of the underpinning programme and key activities across the place/borough based on population health needs and health inequalities.
• Support specific projects (e.g. FIT e-Safety netting pilot) and tumour site ‘Expert Reference Groups’ (e.g. Lower GI) that support the whole NCL portfolio
• Identify examples of local, national and international best practice that can used to support the programme delivery from a GP / practice perspective.
• Maintain excellent standards of interpersonal skills and communication in a professional, courteous and friendly manner at all times, both within the organisation and with all levels of staff and with external bodies, including up to Cancer Alliance level, often providing, receiving and analysing complex and sensitive information.
• The GP Cancer Clinical Lead will have experience in general practice, a specialist interest in cancer and also have experience in primary care improvement and/or project delivery.
The post holder, in conjunction with the co-clinical director and programme lead, will regularly assess and evaluate their effectiveness in the delivery of improvements.

Person specification

Qualification, Knowledge, and Experience

Essential criteria

Experience from JCPTGP or equivalent; or CCT in General Practice and inclusion on the General Practice Register RCGP qualification
Evidence of continued academic and professional development
Experience in a cancer or general practice environment.

Communication and other skills

Essential criteria

Understanding of how to effectively influence stakeholders
Ability to develop and maintain close working relationships at all levels between individuals, teams and organisations
Experience of clinical audit and evaluation techniques.
Able to draw qualitative and quantitative data from a wide range of sources and present in a clear and concise manner
Experience in interpreting data to deliver a plan for improvement.
Knowledge of current primary care cancer related policy.
Knowledge of processes involved in primary care and of current cancer related initiatives.
Knowledge and ability to successfully lead and manage change in working practices.

Desirable criteria

Experience of project and programme management techniques and tools such as Prince2 or Managing Successful Programmes.
Proficient in the use of IT (including WORD, Excel and PowerPoint)
