Job overview

An excellent opportunity has arisen for an enthusiastic and experienced pharmacist to play a pivotal role in our service for patients admitted to the Emergency Department (ED) at Whittington Health NHS trust.

The post holder will be responsible for providing a high quality clinical pharmacy service to the Emergency and Integrated Care divison and input into the growing Urgent and Emergency Care agenda

The post holder will work closely both with our pharmacy team and the multidisciplinary emergency department team to:

  • Provide and further develop high value clinical pharmacy services for patients admitted to the ED.
  • Contribute to the ED & Acute Medicine MDT through multiple training sessions,
  • Input into clinical guidelines, PGD development and service improvement work.
  • Contribute pharmacy leadership to the Pharmacy Emergency and Integrated Medicine team by supporting junior staff during rotations
  • Work across the hospital-community interface to improve medicines management on transfer of care and improve patient safety.

Education and Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • MPharm (or equivalent)
  • Registered with the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC)
  • Further post graduate qualification Diploma/MSc in Pharmacy Practice or Clinical Pharmacy, or equivalent
Desirable criteria
  • Membership of the Royal Pharmaceutical Society
  • Independent Prescriber
  • Member of relevant professional clinical groups (e.g. UKCPA)
  • Leadership or Management qualification

Skills and Abilities

Essential criteria
  • High-level clinical skills sufficient to engage in appropriate dialogue with senior clinicians around complex clinical cases.
  • Good written and oral communication skills and able to communicate with patients and all grades of healthcare staff (verbally and in writing).
  • Good negotiation skills and the ability to influence senior pharmacy and medical staff, the multidisciplinary team and management.
  • Experience of supervising and training junior pharmacists and wider pharmacy team members
  • Experience of providing education and training to pharmacy staff, nursing staff and doctors.
  • Good interpersonal and negotiation skills.
  • Good problem solving skills.
  • Excellent numeracy skills.
  • Ability to evaluate and to plan service developments
  • Understand, articulate and apply the principles of change management to the healthcare setting

Knowledge and Experience

Essential criteria
  • Demonstrates a whole-system patient-focused approach to work.
  • Relevant clinical experience from working in areas linked to Urgent and Emergency Care / Acute Medicine.
  • Suitable experience of working in an acute hospital setting.
  • Experience as a line manager.
  • Involvement in the writing of clinical guidelines and policies.
  • Experience of appraising staff and giving feedback.
  • Experience in education and training and acting as a clinical supervisor.
Desirable criteria
  • Knowledge of national bodies responsible for supporting clinical governance and medicine safety in the acute hospital setting
  • Experience of contributing to, or leading quality improvement projects
  • An understanding of what integrated care is and how this applies to Pharmacy
  • Knowledge of the wider NCL healthcare system and priorities
  • An understanding of how digital tools / EPR functionality can improve clinical practice in the inpatient setting
