Senior Scientific Adviser

NHS AfC: Band 8c

The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) is the independent organisation responsible for providing national guidance and advice on promoting high quality health, public health and social care.

As an equal opportunities employer we are committed to creating a inclusive environment and welcome everyone from all backgrounds to apply so we can continue to create a workforce which is representative of the communities we serve.

If you are suitably qualified and have an interest in remote, hybrid, full time or part time working we encourage you to get in touch as we are happy to discuss potential flexible working opportunities.

We have modern offices in Manchester city centre and Stratford, London.  Please take into consideration that you may be required to commute to one of our offices for business purposes if necessary.

Job overview

Are you a proactive and enthusiastic individual with experience in health economics, health outcomes research, health technology assessment or guideline development? Do you want to play a key role in managing a portfolio of science policy and methods research projects that have a major impact on NICE’s guidance?

We have a vacancy for a Senior Scientific Adviser in NICE’s Science Policy team. Our aim is to build on NICE’s reputation as a methodological innovator, and to improve our methods to take account of novel technologies and changes in the wider health and care system.

Please note that this role may not be eligible for sponsorship under the Skilled Worker route, please refer to the Direct Gov website for more information with regards to eligibility.

We reserve the right to close adverts early should we receive sufficient applications so please don’t delay your submission.

Main duties of the job

The Senior Scientific Adviser plays an integral role in managing the team and should be broadly familiar with NICE’s guidance programmes and science policy and research activities.
The role will consist of:
1.    Contributing to the development of responses to science policy issues. Typically, a policy response is needed when new scientific developments, or new policy decisions by government or regulators, mean that NICE’s policies or methods require updating.
2.    Working with teams across NICE to prioritise and co-ordinate science policy and research activities, including supporting updates of our guidance development manuals.
3.    Contributing to NICE Listens, which uses deliberative public engagement on moral, ethical or social value issues to inform NICE’s policies and methods.
4.    Managing NICE’s delivery of multi-stakeholder collaborative projects under the supervision of the Associate Director.
5.    Providing senior technical expertise and input relating to the delivery of science policy and methods research projects.
6.    Developing proposals for funding applications in collaboration with partners in the UK and internationally.
7.    Developing relationships with key UK, European and international funders, research councils, policy organisations, academia and industry.
8.    Other duties as required.

Working for our organisation

The Science Policy team undertakes research and works with and influences external policy partners on scientific and research issues related to the work of NICE. The team develops NICE’s methods for health technology assessment and guideline development, and encourages partners to commission research relevant to our research priority areas.
We have built up a broad portfolio of science policy and research methods projects that addresses some of the most challenging issues facing NICE. Examples of recent and ongoing projects include our work with NHS England and the Department for Health and Social Care to develop innovative models that inform payments for new antimicrobials, our review of the implementation of the NICE severity modifier, and our appraisal of policy options regarding the perspective to be taken in economic analyses underpinning NICE guidance. We are also responsible for NICE Listens, NICE’s programme for deliberative public engagement.
We can offer you a great place to work with good benefits, flexible working, and a supportive, friendly and inclusive environment.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The Science Policy team adopts a flexible approach, meaning that the post holder will work on multiple projects and activities at any one time (including projects and activities led by other teams) and that specific tasks assigned to the post holder may change in response to business needs.
