COVID-19 has reinforced the impact that threats to health can have on society and the economy and driven health security as a critical component of our national security architecture. The United Kingdom Health Security Agency (UKHSA) is a system leader for health security; taking action internationally to strengthen global health security, providing trusted advice to government and the public and reducing inequalities in the way different communities experience and are impacted by infectious disease, environmental hazards, and other threats to health.

UKHSA’s remit, as an agency with a global-to-local reach, is to protect the health of the nation from infectious diseases and other external threats to health. As the nation’s expert national health security agency UKHSA will:

  • Prevent: anticipate threats to health and help build the nation’s readiness, defences and health security
  • Detect: use cutting edge environmental and biological surveillance to proactively detect and monitor infectious diseases and threats to health
  • Analyse: use world-class science and data analytics to assess and continually monitor threats to health, identifying how best to control and mitigate the risks
  • Respond: take rapid, collaborative and effective actions nationally and locally to mitigate threats to health when they materialise
  • Lead: lead strong and sustainable global, national, regional and local partnerships designed to save lives, protect the nation from public health threats, and reduce inequalities

Job overview

As a Senior Content Designer, you will be responsible for managing the design of the COVID-19 Dashboard and related products.


Main duties of the job

You will work in a multidisciplinary matrix environment with a range of internal and external stakeholders.

We’re looking for a personable, flexible individual who is an advocate for user centred design and an expert in written communications. You must be able to think strategically about the content design challenge at hand, considering both the user and the wider organisational perspective.

You will be someone who is respectful and tactful in your approach to clients who perhaps aren’t as familiar with user-centred design. You must enjoy working with others to make things happen with the ability to work to tight deadlines. Ideally, you’ll have a broad range of skills, including working well with others across boundaries; having the ability to think both critically and creatively about new ideas and options; and the tenacity to see things through.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

  • Create content that works for our users - easy to navigate; clear to understand, visually engaging and accessible
  • Build strong relationships across the whole organisation, to ensure that your work meets user needs and is data/research driven
  • Ensure all content assets meet relevant design, tone of voice and brand guidelines
  • Ensure content is tested and improved based on user feedback, research and data
  • Keep abreast of new industry approaches to content design, particularly within government, health and social care.
  • Creating, improving, publishing and managing high-quality, user-centred content.
  • Making complex language and processes easy to understand.
  • Using analytics, user feedback and user research to evaluate and improve content.
  • Building relationships with stakeholders to understand their goals and working with them to improve user journeys and content quality.
  • Working on the active implementation of our content strategy, highlighting blockers or potential improvements.
  • Agile working - you understand and can participate in planning, stand-ups, and retros.
  • Showing your work, talking about content created and why a certain approach was taken.

Professional development 

  • Identify, discuss and action own professional performance and training / development needs with your line manager through appraisal / individual development plan. Attending internal / external training events
  • To participate in all mandatory training as required, i.e. fire safety, information governance and all other mandatory training.

Essential Criteria:

  • Experience of content design within a government setting, preferably with GDS or NHS experience
  • Experience of working in agile teams
  • Understanding of best practices in content design and how to embed them into an agile workflow to deliver timely outputs
  • Experience of content management systems (such as Whitehall)
  • Ability to collaborate with stakeholders and contribute to improving these relationships, using evidence to explain decisions made
  • Good time management and the ability to work autonomously
  • Adept at providing simple, clear content to communicate complex issues
  • Confident communicator: able to persuade, negotiate, influence, network, and collaborate with stakeholders
  • Ability to get to the heart of an issue quickly and clearly
  • Educated to degree level in relevant subject or significant experience of working at a similar level in specialist area

Desirable Criteria:

  • Knowledge of user research techniques and principles to define and understand user needs
  • Experience of working alongside user researchers and interaction/visual designers to create frictionless user journey
  • Postgraduate or professional qualification or equivalent experience in content design

You will be required to complete an application form. You will be assessed on essential criteria and this will be in the form of a CV/ Application form and up to 1250 word maximum Statement of Suitability.

This should outline how you consider your skills, experience and achievements, provide evidence of your suitability for the role, with particular reference to the essential criteria outlined.

If you are successful at this stage, you will progress to interview.

Candidates who pass the interview criteria but are not offered a post will be kept on a reserve list for 12 months and may be contacted if similar roles become available.
