ST3 Junior Registrar - Emergency Medicine

Specialty Trainee (ST3 +)

Job overview

We are interested in hearing from individuals with at least four years of postgraduate experience to work as Junior Registrars (ST3 level) in our Emergency Department.

The post will be based at the Emergency Department of the Princess Royal University Hospital, which is a designated Trauma Unit and Hyper-acute Stroke Centre serving one of the largest patient populations in the London Borough of Bromley.

The ED consultant team provides clinical supervision and care delivery 16 hours per day, seven days a week. They also have varied special interests, including trauma, frailty, disaster medicine, education, public health, global health, and pre-hospital care.

There is a strong training culture incorporating lecture-room teaching and clinical supervision, opportunities to attend relevant clinics and courses, and full immersion simulation sessions.

Regularly scheduled academic time is also built into the rota to allow for audit, Quality Improvement Projects (QIP), and personal learning and development.

Main duties of the job

The primary duties of the post are to see new patients within the Emergency Department (ED) and to be an on-site source of advice and support for more junior doctors in the ED.

While this is a registrar post, more senior support will be available in the department at all times in the form of either an ED consultant or a more senior registrar-grade doctor.

The post requires being on duty one in every three weekends.

Applications from doctors who wish to work less than full time are welcomed.

THE EMERGENCY DEPARTMENT

Introduction

The workload of the Emergency Department is typical for a suburban hospital, with a particular emphasis on medicine and paediatrics. The Emergency Department receives about 80, 000 attendances per year, with another 40,000 attending the Urgent Care Centre.

Reception and Ambulatory Area

The Emergency Department shares a front door with a co-located Urgent Care Centre which provides an initial streaming service for all patients not arriving by ambulance.

The Emergency Department Reception and Adult Waiting Area gives access to a Nurse Triage room, a phlebotomy room and an ambulatory assessment and treatment area.

Majors

Following refurbishment, the majors area has 21 single cubicles including an isolation room with lobby and en-suite toilet.

Resuscitation Room

There are four fully equipped Resuscitation bays with full invasive monitoring facilities. One bay is specifically equipped for the treatment of children.

Paediatric Area

This area was recently refurbished to provide separate facilities for nurse triage, a children’s waiting area, and 7 cubicles including one high dependency room.

Ambulatory Decision Unit

This unit is immediately adjacent to the Emergency Department and has capacity for 15 recliner chairs. Patients are admitted under the care of the ED consultants on pre-defined clinical pathways for observation, treatment, or further diagnostic evaluation to support a safe discharge.

Diagnostic Imaging

The imaging department is located immediately behind the Emergency Department, with facilities for plain films and CT (24 hours) and Ultrasound and MRI (limited hours). Advanced imaging is a Consultant delivered service 24/7. A mobile Ultrasound machine is available for the exclusive use of trained Emergency Department doctors.

Administration and Teaching

Offices for Emergency Medicine Consultants and senior nurses, and administrative and support staff are co-located with the Emergency Department. There is an Emergency Department Seminar Room with audiovisual and IT equipment.

Relatives Room

There is a relative’s room for family members of critically ill patients.

CLINICAL ORGANISATION

There is active undergraduate teaching (KCL medical students at different stages of their training and elective medical students from all over the world) in both departments.

Undergraduate medical student teaching is provided in the following ways in addition to shop floor teaching:
1. Twice weekly sessions (year 4) for those in EMTL module

There are protected weekly teaching sessions for Junior and Middle Grade doctors with input from Emergency Medicine Consultants and others.

Interdisciplinary teaching and learning

Interdisciplinary and multi-professional teaching and learning is actively encouraged in the department. Nursing students, Radiography students and other Allied Health Professionals rotate through the department as part of their training. In addition, London Ambulance Technicians and Paramedics are regularly seconded to the Department as part of their initial and/or refresher in-hospital training.

Resuscitation training

The Resuscitation Teaching Programme for staff of King's College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust and students of the allied professional schools is organised by Resuscitation Training Officers. The Department offers training on all life support courses- ATLS, ALS, ILS and APLS are run several times a year.

The Local Area

Bromley offers the ‘best of both worlds’ due to the close proximity and good transport links into central London and its leafy suburban feel. It is a great location for families and anyone that would enjoy a calmer pace and ‘town life’ while benefiting from all the amenities of the capital.
