Job overview

This is a 6-month fixed term replacement Health Education England rotation post available during March to August.   The remit of the post holder will be to work with the multi-disciplinary team, playing an active role in the general histopathology workload and especially supporting the cut-up requirements.   

You must be fully registered with the GMC and hold a Licence to Practice and be on the Specialist Register, or within 6 months of attaining your CCT or equivalent to be eligible for interview. 

The postholder will have regular contact with vulnerable adults an/or children (0-18 years) therefore this post is subject to the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act (Exceptions Order) 1975, and as such, it will be necessary for a submission for Disclosure to be made to the Disclosure and Barring Services to check for any previous criminal convictions. 

Main duties of the job

·       To provide a service for patients, together with other colleagues.

·       Shared responsibility with other colleagues for providing histopathology cut-up and reporting support.  Responsible also for covering colleagues’ periods of annual leave and short-term sickness.

·       Conduct all activities within the contracted level of service and operating plan for service(s).

·       Be aware of, and comply with, all Trust infection prevention and control policies, to include hand hygiene, personal hygiene, environmental and food hygiene.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The candidate will be introduced to cutting-up procedures with consultant supervision tailored to the experience of the post holder. A gradually increasing degree of independence will be encouraged as the necessary skills to deal with more complex specimens are acquired.

Similarly initial reporting under consultant supervision will be confined to straightforward cases with a gradual increase in the trainee’s repertoire as experience and the necessary knowledge and skills are acquired. Reporting of diagnostic surgical work is carried out on a one-to-one basis with the supervising Consultant, and to begin with all cases and reports will be monitored by the supervising Consultant before reports are signed out. The degree of independence in this area will be tailored according to the trainee’s experience, diagnostic skills, and knowledge.

The Trainee will be exposed to non-gynaecological cytopathology including fine needle aspirates and receive instruction in reporting these

Qualifications & Registration

Essential criteria
  • Registerable medical qualification
  • MBBS or equivalent
  • Eligible for full registration with GMC with License to Practice
Desirable criteria
  • Other higher degree or diploma (eg MD)

Training, Experience & Administration

Essential criteria
  • Previous experience relevant to the speciality
  • knowledge up to date and is fit to practice safely
  • Experience in day to day organisation of histopathology services
Desirable criteria
  • Familiar with current structure of Health Service

Personal skills

Essential criteria
  • Effective communicator, able to work in a close knit tea and co-operate with all medical and paramedical staff
Desirable criteria
  • Familiarity with information technology and general computer skills
