Job overview
We are looking for a dynamic Registered Nurse to work in our Eye Services at Queen Mary’s Hospital, Sidcup and Orpington Hospital. The service offers a comprehensive service that gives the post holder an opportunity to learn a new and interesting speciality or progress their current ophthalmic role, skills and knowledge.
We are looking for someone who embraces change, while working with the care group to implement new ways of working who always has the patient at the centre of all they do.
You will care for patients attending their eye appointment or procedure, coordinate clinical activity, complete various diagnostic eye tests, assist with ocular procedures and use their holistic knowledge to develop pre-assessment and rapid access assessment skills and much more.
You must demonstrate caring qualities, deliver high quantity care with excellent communication skills, and work well in a multi-professional team so patients are supported and move through the department in a timely and safe manner.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
Clinical Practice
- To practice within the NMC the Code: Professional Standards (2015) and adhere to this at all times.
- To assess, plan and evaluate individualized programmes of care for patients in partnership with the patient, their carer’s and the multidisciplinary team.
- To support and assist in the health education of patients and their families. To ensure care is delivered in accordance with latest evidence based practice guidelines. To ensure that patients and next of kin are informed as appropriate.
- To maintain up to date and comprehensive records of care in accordance with NMC and legal requirements. To maintain patient confidentiality at all times.
- To support junior colleagues, students, and visitors to the department.
- To communication and customer care skills with patients and their relatives/carers, thereby acting as a positive role model for nurses and other staff. To act in a professional manner at all times.

Education and Qualifications
Essential criteria
- Registered Nurse (RN1) with active NMC registration at time of starting appointment.
Skills and Competencies
Essential criteria
- Communication skills – able to relate and communicate with patients and staff at all levels and from different professions. Adapts communication style as necessary and is able to work with and through others.
- Team building and working skills – able to lead a team to achieve results.
- Keen interest to continue professional development in Ophthalmic nursing.
