Job overview

The main responsibilities of the post-holder will be to initiate, develop and manage research projects focused on the effects of optical radiation in relation to UV-induced DNA damage, the exploration of other biomarkers of UV and visible radiation exposure and effect (including UVC radiation), the mechanisms and dynamics of UV-induced nitric oxide release, the pigmentation response, and other optical radiation health effects.  

Main duties of the job

  • To actively seek funding opportunities: To contribute to development of research proposals and writing of grant applications under the guidance of the Group Leader, including going through UKHSA’s system of approval for project submissions. 
  • To lead on relevant research projects: To apply cellular biological methods relevant to the Group’s current areas of research using appropriate technologies, including isolation and culture of primary cells, and derivation of biomolecules (DNA, RNA, proteins) from human skin. Analyses by western blotting, quantitative polymerase chain reaction, fluorescence in situ hybridisation (FISH), flow cytometry to immuno-histochemistry. 
  • To generate sound laboratory data in support of research projects, to analyse and interpret complex scientific data sets using appropriate software tools.  
  • To write and contribute to peer-reviewed publications related to the Group’s areas of scientific research.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Main Duties of the job (continued):

  • To present research findings at in-house, national and international meetings and conferences.
  • To recognise potential implications of observations and potential paths for future novel research.
  • To manage UV sources, to liaise with RPAs to organise and maintain training of staff and the rolling safety programme.
  • Design and collaborate on ‘in human’ research studies involving irradiation with UV and/or visible light, including submission of proposals to ethics boards.
  • To assist the laboratory manager with regular checks on maintenance of equipment and laboratory safety procedures. To assist with monitoring laboratory stocks.
  • To assist with monitoring laboratory finances.
  • To be able to work alone, unsupervised.
  • To undertake peer reviews of submitted publications prepared by outside individuals as required by journals.
  • To participate and contribute directly to regular Group discussions and meetings. 

The post holder will support the Group Leader by taking on a number of responsibilities, including: 

  • Responsibility for managing projects, generation and analysing data, design and planning experiments, communicating with other project members, attending project meetings, writing reports, and delivering results on time and on budget. 
  • Developing proposals for externally funded grant applications and projects which are scientifically sound, appropriate and relevant to the Group’s remit and UKHSA’s overall aims and objectives. 
  • Training and supervision of more junior staff, visiting scientists and students (including lecturing at external sites) as necessary. 
  • Dissemination of information and scientific data and results to collaborators and the wider research community by presenting posters and oral presentations at relevant national and international scientific meetings and conferences. 
  • Dissemination of information and scientific data and results to, and involvement and engagement of, stakeholders including members of the public through organisation of and presentation at relevant activities/meetings. 
  • Production of high-quality scientific manuscripts for publication in international peer-review journals. 
  • Assist other members of the Group, Department and other UKHSA colleagues with wider projects as required.

Role Criteria and Other Requirements 

Essential role criteria (including qualifications, licenses and registrations): 

  • BSc Honours (2:1 or 1) in biological sciences or a related discipline (biomedical sciences, medical engineering, biophysics, photobiology) or equivalent experience in biolab.
  • PhD in biological sciences, or significant experience in biolab(postgraduate)
  • Understanding of the effects of optical radiation on biological systems 
  • Understanding of relevant techniques, including but not limited to optical radiation dosimetry, DNA damage and gamma-H2AX assays, and experience in generating high quality data using these techniques 
  • Use of mouse models for optical radiation investigations 
  • Experience in the analysis and interpretation of data, including use of relevant statistical software 
  • Experience of writing scientific manuscripts for publication in peer-reviewed scientific journals 
  • Experience of presenting own data and results at relevant meetings and scientific conferences 
  • Good understanding of health and safety legislation and good practice, COSSH and experience of safe laboratory and Animal Facility working practices, including experience of managing risk 
  • Animal handling – experience of working with mice in an appropriate facility on a day-to-day basis 
  • Excellent communication skills, the ability to work very closely and communication effectively with a range of colleagues 
  • Excellent presentation skills - good standard office IT skills, a high level of scientific writing and the ability to analyse experimental results 
  • Able to work independently with good time management skills 
  • Able to travel for work and willingness to work occasional evenings/weekends 
  • An understanding of and commitment to equality of opportunity and good working relationships

Selection Process Details 

This vacancy will be assessed using a competency-based framework which will assess your qualifications, knowledge and experience and / or skills and abilities outlined in the essential criteria.

Eligibility Criteria - X-Gov

Across government: This vacancy is open to all Civil Service employees and employees of accredited non-departmental public bodies (NDPBs) who were appointed on merit following a fair and open competition; or were appointed to a permanent post through an exception in the Civil Service Commissioners' rules. Prior agreement to be released on a loan basis must be obtained before commencing the application process. This role is being offered as office/lab based at our site in Chilton (Didcot)
If based at one of our labs, you will be required to have a Counter Terrorism Check security vetting check as a minimum. For meaningful National Security Vetting checks to be carried out individuals need to have lived in the UK for a sufficient period of time. You should normally have been resident in the United Kingdom for the last 3 years as the role requires Counter Terrorism Check (CTC) clearance. In exceptional circumstances UK residency less than the outlined periods may not necessarily bar you from gaining national security vetting and applicants should contact the Vacancy Holder/Recruiting Manager listed in the advert for further advice.

Security Clearance Level Requirement  

Successful candidates must pass a basic disclosure and barring security check.

Salary Information 

If you are successful at interview, and are moving from another government department, NHS, or Local Authority, the relevant starting salary principles for level transfers or promotions will apply. Otherwise, roles are offered at the pay scale minimum for the grade, but in exceptional circumstances there may be flexibility if you are able to demonstrate you are already in receipt of an existing, higher salary. Pay increases are through the relevant annual pay award for the role and terms.
