Job overview
The Novel and Dangerous Pathogens training team sits within the Operations team, under the Public Health Microbiology directorate. The team’s work focuses on designing and delivering scientific and safety training for scientists within our department but also providing those courses on a commercial basis to scientists in the UK and internationally, for biosafety and biosecurity training in normal times, for pandemic preparedness and in capacity strengthening. The Novel and Dangerous Pathogens training team is also part of the World Health Organisation Collaborating Centre for Applied Biosafety and Training and so supports the World Health Organisation to provide training internationally. As such multiple international links and networks are part of its remit.
Main duties of the job
The post holder will play a key role in creating and developing digital training content for the Novel and Dangerous Pathogens training team to deliver high-quality biosafety and biosecurity training efficiently and effectively across UKHSA. This includes contributing to the successful delivery of commercial project commitments made with stakeholders; a key aspect of which will involve the creation and development of high-quality digital training content for global distribution. This position is vital to the team’s mission; supporting the onboarding of incoming scientists at Porton, facilitating knowledge exchange across UKHSA and contributing to large-scale commercial and international projects aimed at promoting best practices, skills, and standards.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
- Lead the creation and development of e-learning training in biosafety and biosecurity
- Review and update existing digital training packages
- Support other team members in the creation, development and review of e-learning training
- Responsible for stakeholder communications
- Ensure project targets are met
- Implement range of techniques to support all team training activities
- Provide in-person training in biosafety and biosecurity
- Fulfilling the requirements of UKHSA Values and Behaviours: ‘Health, Safety and Wellbeing’ commensurate with grade.
- Participating in all mandatory training as required e.g. DSE, information governance, safeguarding, etc.
- Identifying, discussing, and actioning own professional performance and training / development needs with line manager
- Performing any other duties required by the Line manager commensurate with grade
Role Criteria and Other Requirements
Essential role criteria (including qualifications, licenses and registrations):
- Training content development, e,g. Use of Articulate, Kallidus, Absorb.
- Digital competency, e.g. digital content creation/development, online training.
- Leading of project teams or projects
- Scientific background, e.g. experience in microbiology, virology, immunology, molecular biology.
- Ability to work independently
- Experience in communicating and engaging effectively with internal and external stakeholders
- Working within a regulated environment, e.g. ISO 9001
Desirable role criteria
- Experience in specialised digital content creation, e.g. biosafety or biosecurity
- Working or knowledge in the training/teaching sector

During the interview we will assess against the below:

Experience
- Experience in the creation or maintenance of any online training material, e,g. Articulate, Kallidus, Absorb.
- Experience in providing biosafety or biosecurity training, e.g. digital content, distance learning or in-person laboratory-based.
You will be asked to prepare and present a 5–10-minute presentation, aimed to assess your Experience in communicating and engaging effectively with internal and external stakeholders.

Eligibility Criteria - Across Government
This vacancy is open to all Civil Service employees and employees of accredited non-departmental public bodies (NDPBs) who were appointed on merit following a fair and open competition; or were appointed to a permanent post through an exception in the Civil Service Commissioners' rules. Location
This role is being offered as office/lab based at our Scientific Campus in Porton (Salisbury).
If based at one of our scientific campuses, you will be required to have a Counter Terrorism Check security vetting check as a minimum. For meaningful National Security Vetting checks to be carried out individuals need to have lived in the UK for a sufficient period of time. You should normally have been resident in the United Kingdom for the last 3 years as the role requires Counter Terrorism Check (CTC) clearance. In exceptional circumstances UK residency less than the outlined periods may not necessarily bar you from gaining national security vetting and applicants should contact the Vacancy Holder/Recruiting Manager listed in the advert for further advice.

Successful candidates must pass a Basic Disclosure and Barring Security (DBS) check.

Salary Information
If you are successful at interview, and are moving from another government department, NHS, or Local Authority, the relevant starting salary principles for level transfers or promotions will apply. Otherwise, roles are offered at the pay scale minimum for the grade, but in exceptional circumstances there may be flexibility if you are able to demonstrate you are already in receipt of an existing, higher salary. Pay increases are through the relevant annual pay award for the role and terms.
