Applications are invited for a Consultant in Dermatology based at Barking, Havering and Redbridge University Hospitals NHS Trust.
Our Dermatology team vision is to deliver the highest standards of care for our patients. Barking, Havering & Redbridge University Hospitals NHS Trust (BHRUT) is one of the largest Associate Teaching Hospitals, providing acute care for over 750,000 people from across 2 main sites. Consultant review of in-patients is provided daily.
Our Trust is in an excellent location, close to Central London and well situated in the South East. As well as all the advantages of being close to the city, you will discover that Essex has a beautiful countryside as well as excellent schools, transport links, amenities and residential areas.
The Trust has on-site nursery facilities. Queen’s Hospital and King George Hospital are 4.5 miles apart with a free staff shuttle service. Both hospitals are within walking distance of mainline stations, where there is a reliable train service to London Liverpool Street station every 10 minutes (with a travelling time of 15-30 minutes).

Dermatology services are currently provided at Queen’s Hospital. Most consultants and staff are based for a least part the week in the new dedicated dermatology department at Queen’s. With this post we are looking to provide support to existing dermatology service and the appointed doctor will have paediatric dermatology clinical sessions at Queen’s Hospital, Barking community hospital and King George’s Hospital.
There is an increasing level of integration of the service across sites. Dermatology business meetings, attended by consultants, take place at Queen’s Hospital on a monthly basis.
Key Priorities for Future Development
- Continue to run a dedicated Paediatric dermatology service
- Consolidation of the BHR dermatology service as a specialist centre for skin cancer;
- Working with the cancer network to implement and develop a high standard of cancer care;
- Improving current 18-week referral to treatment care pathways;
- Working with the multi-disciplinary team to support and develop the dermatology nursing service;
- Development and delivery of care to meet the NHS plan and associated targets;
- Development of a range of specialist interests to meet the needs of the local population and provide a comprehensive and high quality service;
- Work closely with Primary Care Trusts to develop an appropriate network of GPs with a special interest in Dermatology;

We’re an organisation that is getting better and better and our improvements are driven by a determination to deliver care we’re proud of and our patients are happy with. We’re no longer in special measures; we’ve opened two new theatres at our Elective Surgical Hub in King George Hospital (KGH); and Matthew Trainer, our Chief Executive, was named the top CEO by the Health Service Journal in 2024.
We operate from two main sites – KGH in Goodmayes and Queen’s Hospital in Romford. We have two busy emergency departments with more than 330,000 people visiting them last year. We’re campaigning to secure the £35m we need to transform the A&E at Queen’s and get rid of corridor care.
Our patients are benefitting from our Women’s Health Hub in Ilford; an Ageing Well Centre in Hornchurch; and Community Diagnostic Centres (CDC) at Barking Community Hospital and at St George’s Health and Wellbeing Hub in Hornchurch.
These CDCs are open 12 hours a day, 7 days a week and are providing an extra 94,000 scans a year.
The majority of our 8,000 staff – who come from 146 different countries - live in the three diverse London boroughs we serve and are from black, Asian and minority ethnic groups. Many can work flexibly and more than 400 of them are on our Ofsted accredited apprenticeship programmes. We’re proud to be a London Living Wage employer.
We’re looking forward to introducing an electronic patient record that will be transformative for our staff and beneficial for our patients
