Job overview
The successful candidate will join the Gastrointestinal Unit within Division of Surgery with Gastroenterology, Endoscopy and GI Surgery all working together as one team thereby creating fantastic opportunities for improved care of our patients.
Gastroenterology at BHR is a busy and thriving department providing a broad range of services for patients with all gastrointestinal disorders. Jointly led by specialist medical and surgical gastroenterologists and supported by specialist nurses in many fields, gastroenterology services include rapid access to diagnostics for patients with potential GI malignancies through endoscopy and Faster Diagnostic Standard (FDS) clinics. BHR is a regional cancer centre for the diagnosis and treatment of upper GI malignancies and colorectal cancer. We are fully accredited for training in endoscopy and are a Regional Training Centre with JAG. We provide assessment, treatment and continuing care for patients with all gastrointestinal and liver conditions. The Endoscopy unit at Queen’s Hospital is also a nominated and chosen site for the NHS Bowel Cancer Screening Program.
Main duties of the job
The successful candidate will have a broad experience in the management of both Gastroenterology inpatients and Gastroenterology outpatients and will have to engage in upper and lower GI clinics and FDS pathways. The successful candidate will be expected to cover a minimum of two clinics per week, with a clinic profile of 4 new and 10 follow-ups. The candidate will also be expected to do a minimum of two endoscopy lists per week which will be in line with the BSG guidelines.
The post-holder will contribute to the 24/7 GI bleed on-call rota and will have weekend/bank holiday gastroenterology ward rounds. The job plan will be flexible, with some endoscopy lists on a regular fixed basis, and others varying dependent upon dropped lists.
The following is not an exhaustive or exclusive list of the duties of a consultant within the Surgical Division.
· Ward based Gastroenterology inpatient care
· Gastroenterology outpatient clinic service
· Contribute to a 1:14 on call GI bleed rota
· Active participation in clinical governance
· Educational and clinical supervision of junior staff
· Active participation in teaching and training of juniors
Working for our organisation
We’re an organisation that is getting better and better and our improvements are driven by a determination to deliver care we’re proud of and our patients are happy with.
They are benefitting from a new electronic patient record (we were the last acute trust in London to introduce one) and our maternity services have been rated good by the Care Quality Commission.
We operate from two main sites – KGH in Goodmayes and Queen’s Hospital in Romford. We have two busy emergency departments with more than 330,000 people visiting them last year. We’re campaigning to secure the £35m we need to transform the A&E at Queen’s and get rid of corridor care.
We’re proud of our regional Neurosciences Centre, Radiotherapy Centre and Hyper Acute Stroke Unit. We’re also part of the North East London Cancer Alliance.
We run a Women’s Health Hub in Ilford; an Ageing Well Centre in Hornchurch; and Community Diagnostic Centres (CDC) at Barking Community Hospital and at St George’s Health and Wellbeing Hub. These CDCs are open 12 hours a day, 7 days a week.
The majority of our 8,400 staff – who come from 146 different countries - live in the three diverse London boroughs we serve and are from black, Asian and minority ethnic groups. Many can work flexibly and more than 400 of them are on our Ofsted accredited apprenticeship programmes. We’re proud to be a London Living Wage employer.
Some of the positive changes we’ve made are captured in this film
