Job overview

The ARIA Junior Clinical Research Fellowships (JRF) are a unique opportunity to work at the cutting edge of brain-computer interface (BCI) technology and cognitive neuroscience. Powered by a landmark £6.5 million research grant from the Advanced Research and Invention Agency (ARIA), the role places you at the forefront of translating a new class of therapeutic BCI for brain network disorders. As an ARIA JRF, you will be part of an inter-disciplinary team working on the Forest 1 device which leverages ultrasound’s unique tissue penetration properties to allow whole-brain high-resolution imaging and multi-target neuromodulation. JRFs dedicate half their time to clinical work and half to research. This is the perfect opportunity for a post-foundation program resident doctor with an interest in clinical neuroscience and a strong research background.

Main duties of the job

The ARIA Junior Clinical Research Fellowships (JRFs) are 12-month hybrid positions that include 50% clinical work and 50% research. For clinical work, the JRFs will be part of the neurosurgery department at Queen’s Hospital with responsibilities including ward cover, attending theatre and SHO on-call shifts. The JRFs will also be part of the research team delivering the Forest 1 device study in a group of participants who have had a decompressive craniectomy. This role will include recruitment of study participants and the delivery of experimental sessions which includes coordinating advanced neuroimaging and cognitive/psychiatric testing. Experimental sessions will be delivered across two sites in London. Each JRF will also be expected to lead an aligned research project during their fellowship. The role is suitable for a highly motivated post-foundation programme resident doctor with an interest in clinical neuroscience, a strong research track record

Working for our organisation

We’re an organisation that is getting better and better. We were the most improved Trust in England for A&E performance in 2023/24; we’re no longer in special measures; and Matthew Trainer, our Chief Executive, has been named the top CEO by the Health Service Journal. Our improvements are driven by a determination to deliver care we’re proud of and that our patients are happy with. We are also emerging as a centre of excellence for advanced neurotechnology research. We were the only NHS Trust awarded a highly prestigious Advanced Research and Invention Agency (ARIA) Precision Neurotechnology grant. This landmark £6.5 million award is the largest in the Trust’s history and places us at the forefront of the emerging field of Therapeutic Brain Computer Interface technology. As an ARIA Junior Research Fellow, you will be part of the neurosurgical department at Queen’s Hospital which is one of the busiest units in North London.
