Job overview

We are seeking a motivated and ambitious ST5+ Clinical Fellow in Anaesthetics to join our structured CESR Portfolio Pathway Programme, delivered in partnership between Barking, Havering and Redbridge University Hospitals NHS Trust (BHRUT) and Mid and South Essex NHS Foundation Trust (MSE).

This is an excellent opportunity for non-training grade anaesthetists committed to achieving Specialist Registration via the Portfolio Pathway. The programme offers a structured rotational pathway, consultant supervision and access to specialty training opportunities.

The Department of Anaesthetics provides anaesthetic, pain, pre-operative assessment, maternity, neurology, intensive care and emergency services across Queen's and King George Hospitals.

Successful candidates will benefit from:

  • A structured rotational programme across both Trusts.
  • Dedicated educational and clinical supervision.
  • Named Portfolio Pathway mentors.
  • Opportunities to complete workplace-based assessments, competencies and specialty sign-offs.
  • Regular progress reviews to support successful Portfolio Pathway submission.

This collaborative programme offers a supportive environment for doctors seeking Specialist Registration through the Portfolio Pathway.

Vacancy will be closed earlier if we receive enough applications. Tentative interview date 3rd August.

Main duties of the job

You will be responsible for providing high-quality anaesthetic and perioperative care across a broad spectrum of clinical specialties. Your daily routine will involve active participation in theatre lists, providing essential emergency cover & supporting critical care duties. A core focus of this role is professional advancement via the CESR (Certificate of Eligibility for Specialist Registration) pathway, requiring you to maintain meticulous portfolio evidence and engage fully in Specialist Interest Area (SIA) modules under consultant supervision. Beyond clinical tasks, you will be expected to contribute to the department's educational culture by attending teaching sessions, workshops, and simulation training, play a key role in departmental safety & evolution through involvement in audits, quality improvement initiatives, and clinical governance, while fulfilling service requirements by contributing to the local on-call rotas.

Based mainly in Queen’s and King George Hospitals covering all theatres and remote site anaesthetic with on-call commitment to cover out of hours emergencies. There will be rotation to cover Broomfield hospital and Basildon Cardiothoracic centre to complete all modular training.

Working for our organisation

We’re an organisation that is getting better and better and our improvements are driven by a determination to deliver care we’re proud of and our patients are happy with.

They are benefitting from a new electronic patient record (we were the last acute trust in London to introduce one) and our maternity services have been rated good by the Care Quality Commission.

We operate from two main sites – KGH in Goodmayes and Queen’s Hospital in Romford. We have two busy emergency departments with more than 346,000 people visiting them last year. We’re campaigning to secure the £35m we need to transform the A&E at Queen’s and get rid of corridor care.

We’re proud of our regional Neurosciences Centre, Radiotherapy Centre and Hyper Acute Stroke Unit. We’re also part of the North East London Cancer Alliance.

We run a Women’s Health Hub in Ilford; an Ageing Well Centre in Hornchurch; and Community Diagnostic Centres (CDC) at Barking Community Hospital and at St George’s Health and Wellbeing Hub. These CDCs are open 12 hours a day, 7 days a week.

The majority of our 8,400 staff – who come from 146 different countries - live in the three diverse London boroughs we serve and are from black, Asian and minority ethnic groups. Many can work flexibly and more than 400 of them are on our Ofsted accredited apprenticeship programmes. We’re proud to be a London Living Wage employer.
