Job overview

The Clinical Practitioner will provide specialist input within the ADHD Referral Centre, focusing on triage, screening, and coordination of assessments for individuals with suspected ADHD. Working within a multidisciplinary team, the role supports timely access to care and improved patient outcomes. The post holder will use clinical judgement and validated tools to assess referrals, contribute to care planning, and liaise with families, GPs, and other professionals. This Band 6 role is based at Queen Mary’s Hospital, Sidcup, and aligns with Oxleas NHS Foundation Trust’s commitment to high-quality, person-centred care in adult community mental health services.

Main duties of the job

  • Conduct clinical triage and prioritise referrals using validated tools and clinical judgement.
  • Collaborate with the MDT to support care planning and diagnostic formulation.
  • Liaise with external professionals and families to gather collateral information.
  • Maintain accurate clinical records and ensure compliance with Trust policies.
  • Participate in service audits, pathway development, and quality improvement initiatives.
  • Provide clinical advice and support to colleagues, including junior staff and trainees.
  • Communicate complex and sensitive information effectively to patients and professionals.
  • Work autonomously within professional guidelines, escalating concerns when needed.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

  • Manage own caseload and contribute to ADHD referral pathway coordination.
  • Supervise and mentor junior staff, students, and trainees.
  • Contribute to service development, including pathway redesign and audit activities.
  • Ensure safe and effective clinical decision-making and documentation.
  • Deliver training and psychoeducation related to ADHD.
  • Support performance monitoring through data collection and reporting.
  • Uphold standards in safeguarding, confidentiality, and information governance.
  • Promote collaborative working across teams and external agencie

Person specification

Education/Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Degree-level qualification in a relevant clinical discipline (e.g., RMN, Occupational Therapy, Social Work)
  • Professional registration with the appropriate regulatory body (e.g., NMC)
  • Mandatory training in safeguarding, information governance, infection control, and equality & diversity
Desirable criteria
  • Ongoing professional development in ADHD assessment tools and NICE guidelines
  • Participation in CPD activities, including supervision, study days, and service-specific training
  • Knowledge of neurodevelopmental care pathways

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Minimum 2 years post-registration clinical experience in mental health, neurodevelopmental services, or CAMHS
  • Direct experience in assessing and managing individuals with ADHD or related conditions
  • Familiarity with clinical pathways, multidisciplinary working, and care coordination
Desirable criteria
  • Experience using structured assessment tools and contributing to diagnostic formulation
  • Involvement in service development, audit, or quality improvement initiatives
  • Experience in supervising or mentoring junior staff or students

Skills/Abilities/Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Advanced clinical assessment and formulation skills, especially in ADHD and neurodevelopmental conditions
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to convey complex clinical information
  • Ability to manage own caseload independently and make informed decisions within professional guidelines
Desirable criteria
  • Experience using structured diagnostic tools and interpreting clinical data
  • Skilled in mentoring, coaching, and delivering ADHD-related training
  • Competence in service development, audit, and quality improvement initiatives
