Job overview

The Medical Staffing Manager ensures the smooth and efficient operation of medical HR services within the Trust. They act as a senior advisor and strategic lead on all employment matters concerning medical staff.

Key Objectives:

  • Lead the medical staffing team and manage resources effectively.
  • Maintain strong employment relationships with medical staff.
  • Ensure compliance with HR policies, SLAs, and employment legislation.

Provide expert guidance on recruitment, contracts, and working time regulations.

Main duties of the job

Team Leadership & Management

  • Oversee day-to-day operations of the Medical HR Team
  • Conduct performance reviews, appraisals, and development planning
  • Ensure team delivers timely and professional HR service

Recruitment & Onboarding

  • Manage end-to-end recruitment for all medical roles, including consultants and junior doctors
  • Coordinate vacancy control, advertising, interviews, and pre-employment checks
  • Supervise induction and onboarding processes.

HR Administration & Compliance

  • Advise on medical terms and conditions, contracts, and employment law
  • Ensure accurate documentation and adherence to national guidelines
  • Support managers with workforce planning and cost-efficiency strategies.

Revalidation & Appraisal Oversight

  • Manage the Medical Revalidation and Appraisal Advisor
  • Oversee job planning and appraisal systems for medical staff
  • Ensure compliance with professional standards and regulatory requirements.

Collaboration & Strategic Input

  • Work closely with clinicians, HR colleagues, and external bodies
  • Collaborate with the APC to align processes and ensure consistency across medical staffing functions
  • Contribute to policy development and service improvement
  • Represent medical staffing in strategic planning and decision-making forums.

Education/ Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Degree or equivalent experience in HR environment
  • Commitment to continuing professional development
  • IT qualifications such as ECDL or equivalent level of computer literacy using all Microsoft office packages and Excel to intermediate level
  • Associate CIPD

Knowledge & Experience

Essential criteria
  • Good working and practical knowledge of range of recruitment approaches and their appropriateness for specific needs
  • Experience of planning, organising and scheduling activities of self and team in a pressured working environment with changing priorities
  • Up to date knowledge of recruitment employment law and requirements for pre-employment screening including immigration, references and DBSs.
  • Understanding of Medical and Dental terms and conditions
  • Knowledge of use of psychometric and other selection tests

Skills, abilities, and attributes

Essential criteria
  • Able to deliver recruitment service from identification of need to candidate starting employment.
  • Able to contribute immediately to the work of the department and establishing professional credibility with client managers.
  • Able to build positive relationships with managers, colleagues and Trade Union representatives
  • Able to apply and advise on recruitment policy
  • Able to communicate terms and conditions of employment for all groups of staff employed at the Trust.
  • Able to review Trust recruitment policies and processes and suggest alternative approaches which add value.
  • Good IT skills. Able to analyse reports and data and propose remedial actions if required.
