Job overview

We have an exciting opportunity for a Medical PA to join the Administration Team of the Cancer Genetics Unit at the Royal Marsden in Sutton, supporting private & NHS practice.  This is a leading unit and you would be working with international leaders in the field.

You would be working flexibly as part of our small, friendly team, you will need to be able to prioritise and organise a busy workload, while dealing with queries from clinicians and patients is essential. The successful applicant will have excellent communication and complex diary management skills and be confident communicating with the multidiciplinary team, and with patients.

Applicants are expected to be IT literate and to demonstrate an ability to deal with confidential information.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will be responsible for the provision of a comprehensive PA service to the Clinical Director of Genomics and the Genetics Lead Consultant and other senior clinical colleagues. They will be required to cover a wide range of duties, incorporating diary management and the co-ordination of clinical, administrative and academic work.  They will liaise with all colleagues within the multidisciplinary team, and with internal departments and external agencies, to ensure the continuity of patient treatment.  The post holder will also be responsible for ensuring the smooth running of Consultants’ private practises, the Cancer Genetics Unit’s MDT and departmental meetings, including minute taking.  This job description may be developed over time to meet the specific needs of the Unit in conjunction with the post holder.

These responsibilities will be carried out under the guidance of the Unit Co-ordinator.

The difference between the role of a Medical PA and that of a Medical Secretary is the level of responsibility. To undertake a Medical PA position, the post holder will be required to cover a wide range of duties incorporating diary management and the co-ordination of all clinical/administrative/academic work and the organisation of a consultant’s clinical practice.

Education/Qualifications

Desirable criteria
  • AMSPAR qualified or equivalent
  • Familiar with patient information systems
  • European Computer Driving License (ECDL) or Equivalent

Education/Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Educated to GCSE level or equivalent, including English & Maths
  • Competent at Microsoft Excel, Word and Outlook

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Substantial previous medical secretarial/PA experience.
  • Experience of complex diary management.
  • Experience of taking minutes of meetings.
Desirable criteria
  • Previous experience of training other admin staff & working as part of a Team.
  • A minimum of one year’s experience working in a similar role in a hospital/healthcare setting.
