Job overview
The Royal Marsden is the largest comprehensive cancer centre in Europe, internationally recognised for excellence in patient care, research and education. Our Blood Sciences laboratories operate across three sites: Chelsea, Cavendish Square and Sutton. We are seeking a committed and skilled Band5/6 Biomedical Scientist to join our established team at the Sutton site. This is a 2 year fixed-term role
The Blood Sciences departments process approximately 350,000 samples per year, providing high‑quality laboratory services that support world‑class cancer care. We are fully accredited by UKAS under ISO 15189:2022 and you will play a key role in maintaining the highest standards of quality and patient safety.
Our laboratory operates 24/7, supported by an in‑house on‑call system. Participation in the out‑of‑hours rota is available for staff wishing to contribute to extended service delivery.

Main duties of the job
The post holder will deliver a fit-for-purpose Blood Sciences service, being primarily responsible for analytical testing and contributing to clinical diagnostic services. The role requires rotation across all sections of the department, with primary working relationships in Biochemistry. The post holder will also liaise with staff across pathology and the wider Trust, often taking sole responsibility for work during periods when senior staff are not present.

• Provide specialist technical advice, including troubleshooting analyser, assay, and workflow issues.
• Undertake validation and verification of new methodologies, equipment, and analytical platforms.
• Maintain up-to-date knowledge of all instrumentation and laboratory equipment.

As a Band 6 Biomedical Scientist, you will work across Biochemistry and Blood Sciences, delivering high‑quality analytical and support. You will contribute to daily service operations, troubleshooting, quality assurance, and training of junior staff. The role is ideal for an experienced BMS seeking to develop expertise within a dynamic, forward‑thinking diagnostic environment.

• Post‑registration experience in Biochemistry/Blood Sciences.

Education/Qualifications
Essential criteria
- Registration
- Evidence of ongoing professional development
- Diploma or Degree level study (or equivalent)
Desirable criteria
- Evidence of post registration study or specialist diploma
Experience
Essential criteria
- Experience working as a specialist BMS in Biochemistry or Blood Sciences
- Experience working as a registered BMS in areas of relevant diagnostic laboratory
- Able to work to deadlines
- Able to understand / follow SOPs
- Able to technically validate laboratory results
- Full understanding of EQA & IQC and their implications
- Full understanding of laboratory H&S procedures
Desirable criteria
- Able to perform basic training
