Neuro-Oncology Superintendent Radiographer

Job overview

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced, caring and highly motivated therapy radiographer to join our small  team as an advanced practice radiographer in Neuro-Oncology. The post holder will be based at our Sutton site but with the potential for some cross-site working in Chelsea to support the current Chelsea Specialist Radiographer with annual leave and busy clinics.

The neuro-oncology unit currently provides a service for a range of patients that includes those having stereotactic radiotherapy. The bulk of our SRS workload is intra-cranial metastases (managed by the Neuro-Specialist radiographer), with our CNS colleagues managing the benign patients.  The unit is committed to developing practice using a model of working that utilises the knowledge and experience of therapy radiographers. It is expected that this post will contribute to facilitating a more efficient and responsive workforce within the clinical unit. The aim of this post is to further develop the service as our practice has grown exponentially over the last few years, and offer the patients having treatment at Sutton Face To Face care and support. We work closely in conjunction with the Neuro-Surgical department at St Georges Hospital trust to fulfil the requirements of the Specialist Commissioning provided by NHS England . 

Main duties of the job

1.1.    The post holder will be one of the cross site operational management team and will be required to be competent and able to lead in all service areas as a line manager, providing expert knowledge and specialist technical advice and support to junior staff and other professional groups. This will require the post holder to have attention to detail, and an ability to manage complex and stressful situations with calm efficiency.
1.2.    The post holder will provide expert clinic practice, advice, and support across the Stereotactic Radiosurgery (SRS) pathway, from referral to treatment delivery and follow up. 
1.3.    Key working relationships are with medical staff, radiotherapy physics staff, nursing staff and Clinical Services Divisional staff

2.1    To practice as an expert practitioner providing the highest level of care to patients within the radiotherapy service and to act as role model for all therapeutic radiographers.
2.2    Use expert knowledge to develop departmental radiotherapy protocols and procedures and ensure these are maintained, including analysis and interpretation of relevant literature.
2.3    Maintain the timely and efficient provision of a highly specialist clinical service in which integrated knowledge and clinical governance principles are used to inform patient care.
2.4    To be responsible as member of the managerial team for the organisation of the day to day running of the service.
2.5    Responsible for contributing to developing working practices to meet current professional standards and legislation, including the provision of documents that are accessible and regularly reviewed.
2.6    Be a key member of the management team responsible for leading workforce and service developments to ensure service to patients is delivered in line with best practice principles, ensuring the benefits to patients are maximised through careful, economical and appropriate use of NHS resources including equipment, property, money, and time.
2.7    Contribute to the analysis of complex operational issues such as waiting times, future service demand and be able to implement action plans across department, with an emphasis on stereotactic radiosurgery.
2.8    Lead Radiographer in clinical multidisciplinary audits and implement internal department audits to monitor and maintain the quality of service provision.

Attainments

Essential criteria
  • HCPC registration as a therapeutic radiographer (requires BSc (Hons) in Radiotherapy or equivalent accredited programme)
  • Significant experience as a Band 7 /8a in a complex department, competent in IGRV, IMRT, and SRS/SBRT technologies
  • Post graduate qualification in clinical subject or equivalent experience
  • Post graduate qualification/training in management/leadership/advanced practice or equivalent experience
  • Experience in multi-modal NeuroOncology contouring
  • Experience in on-treat and follow-up review
Desirable criteria
  • MSc/MA in clinical subject/management/leadership
  • Involved in successful implementation project e.g. new equipment or working practise
  • Teaching/lecturing at pre and post graduate level
  • Published as lead author in professional journal
  • Presentation at national/international meeting/conference
