Job overview

This exciting post, will provide an opportunity for a Therapeutic Radiographer to be at the forefront of MRI-guided radiotherapy technology in the UK.                                     

We have an Elekta Unity magnetic resonance imaging linear accelerator (MR-Linac), funded by the Medical Research Council,  installed at The Royal Marsden in Sutton as part of an international Elekta Unity consortium. As consortium members, The Royal Marsden and The Institute of Cancer Research were among the world’s first to offer this pioneering form of radiotherapy to patients. 

The post holder will be a therapeutic radiographer within the expert multi-disciplinary team for the clinical delivery of MRI-guided Radiotherapy. This will require the post holder to acquire theoretical and practical knowledge of MRI so that they are able to support MR-Linac service delivery and development. The post holder will be expected to develop a portfolio of clinical MRI experience including MR safety.  The post holder will contribute to the research carried out by the MR-Linac multidisciplinary team.

Main duties of the job

  • To carry out in a responsible and efficient way, the radiotherapy and imaging processes required for the development of the MR Linac (MRL) programme and support of routine service delivery. The areas of practice will be the MRL, treatment delivery and pre-treatment.
  • There will be a requirement to attain competence in MRI. The post will require the post holder to acquire theoretical and practical knowledge of MRI, and an understanding of MRI protocols and MR safety procedures that will ensure compliance of the radiotherapy department with national MRI safety regulations.
  • As the Band 7 Therapeutic Radiographer, they will contribute to the supervision of the immediate radiotherapy team including students, aides and visitors as necessary at any work base to which they are assigned throughout the department as the post holder would be expected to work clinically treating patients as necessary to support the continuity of service. This can include working in a shift pattern within the Sutton department’s Linac teams.
  • The key working relationships will be with the MR Linac Operational Superintendent, Research Superintendents (Radiotherapy), MRL Radiographers, MRL Physicists, Clinical Oncologists,  Consultant Radiologists, MRI Superintendents (Radiology).

  • To act as a clinical practitioner role model for all therapeutic radiographers. 
  • As clinical lead at the work base to be responsible for evidence based decision making within prescribed limits.
  • Be competent to analyse and approve images following designated training and adhering to protocols.
  • Responsible for the accurate preparation, planning and delivery of treatment by self  and by all members of the immediate team.
  • Set high standards of technical expertise, act as role model to junior staff members.
  • To be responsible for maintaining professional standards of self and other team members.
  • Responsible for the training of team members in the operation of all equipment safely and efficiently as per manufacturers’ instructions, including local guidelines, under the guidance of superintendent radiographers.
  • Meet the regulatory responsibilities defined for an operator as delegated by the Trust under the IR(ME)R regulations and adhere to the MR Linac local rules. With appropriate experience may be defined also as a practitioner for concomitant exposures and attain Level 4 MRL authorisation.
  • Make evidence based decisions within the prescribed scope of practice, including the analysis and approval of planning and treatment verification images, following designated training and adhering to work instructions and protocols.
  • Be responsible for accurate record keeping and that information required for statistics are provided as required by self and team members.

Person specification

Education/Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • HCPC registration as a therapeutic radiographer (requires BSc (Hons) in Radiotherapy or equivalent
  • Post graduate qualification/training in MRI (may be completed after appointment)
Desirable criteria
  • Postgraduate attainment in therapeutic radiography related subject/leadership/management
  • Postgraduate qualification/training in assessing/supervising/teaching

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Significant experience of sophisticated RT environment as a Senior II/Senior I treating advanced techniques, particularly IGRT
  • Participated in a quality management programme
  • Previous experience of participating in clinical education of preregistration students
Desirable criteria
  • Experience using/integrating MR in the radiotherapy pathway
  • Radiotherapy planning/Dosimetry experience
  • Have participated in research/audit/service evaluation.
  • Have experience in paper light/paper free radiotherapy processes
  • Participation in multidisciplinary education

Essential criteria
  • Demonstrate understanding of the advanced principles for sophisticated radiotherapy treatment planning and delivery.
  • Computer literate with associated keyboard skills
  • Have demonstrable problem solving and decision-making ability
