Job overview

In addition to 4 Elekta linear accelerators, the Sutton dept has an Elekta MR linear accelerator, Cyberknife unit, Gulmay superficial unit and two Radixact units with a new Elekta Evo currently being installed. The department has a  Siemens Confidence CT scanner and utilises multi- modality imaging for planning. The Royal Marsden Hospital is the largest comprehensive cancer centre in Europe. Main duties of the job

1.1.    When they are working as a Senior I clinical practitioner they will be responsible for the radiotherapy processes at and the operational management of a specialist highly complex radiotherapy work base, which may be a treatment unit, a CT scanner, a treatment preparation area or a project team such as for the digital transformation implementation.
1.2.    They will supervise their immediate radiographic team to also include students, aides, and visitors on a rotational basis, ensuring that the practise of all results in the output and the radiotherapy processes at their work base being performed accurately and effectively. 
1.3.    The post-holder will liaise with medical, physics, nursing, clerical and support staff within the department and throughout the institution. The key working relationships will be with superintendent radiographers.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

2.1    As clinical lead at the work base to be responsible for evidence based decision making within prescribed limits. Be competent to analyse and approve images following designated training and adhering to protocols.
2.2    Responsible for the accurate preparation, planning and delivery of treatment by self and by all members of the immediate team.
2.3    Set high standards of technical expertise, acting as role model to junior staff members. To be responsible for maintaining professional standards of self and other team members.
2.4    Responsible for the training of team members in the operation of all equipment safely and efficiently as per manufacturers’ instructions, including local guidelines, under the guidance of superintendent radiographers.
2.5    Meet the regulatory responsibilities defined for an operator as delegated by the Trust under the IR(ME)R regulations. With appropriate experience may also be defined as a practitioner for concomitant exposures.

 

Person specification

Education/Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • HCPC registration as a therapeutic radiographer (requires BSc (Hons) in Radiotherapy or equivalent accredited programme)
Desirable criteria
  • Postgraduate attainment in therapeutic radiography related subject/leadership/management
  • Postgraduate qualification/training in assessing/supervising/teaching

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Significant experience of sophisticated RT environment as a Senior II treating advanced techniques, particularly IGRT
  • Participated in a quality management programme
  • Previous experience of participating in clinical education of preregistration students
Desirable criteria
  • Have participated in research/audit/service evaluation.
  • Have experience in paper light/paper free radiotherapy processes
  • Have experience of using Aria/Mosaiq

Skills/Ability/Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Demonstrate understanding of the advanced principles for sophisticated radiotherapy treatment planning and delivery.
  • Computer literate with associated keyboard skills
  • Have demonstrable problem solving and decision-making ability
