We have an exciting opportunity for a HCPC Registered Biomedical Scientist to join us in the Immunology department at Southwest Pathology Services. We are seeking individuals who are dedicated to providing a high-quality patient centric service and are enthusiastic about biomedical science.  This is a full time (37.5hours) position based at the SPS Hub laboratory in Taunton which takes a leading technological approach with state of the art equipment and organisation of workflow based on LEAN principles.

The successful candidate will work and specialise in the Immunology department with the role including working in the haematology department alongside Associate Practitioner and Medical Laboratory Assistant colleagues. The SPS Hub laboratory is 8am-9pm Monday to Friday with staff working as a team to deliver excellence in patient blood testing. We hold ISO15189 UKAS accreditation and are an HCPC approved training Laboratory for both IBMS Registration and Specialist Portfolios.

The primary responsibility includes the day to day sample testing and authorisation of blood test results. This includes operation and maintenance of the analysers, signing off internal quality checks and ensuring accurate record keeping.

You will supervise, mentor and support other Biomedical Scientists, Trainee Biomedical Scientists, Associate Practitioners and Medical Laboratory Assistants within your department, sharing your knowledge, experience and passion for your work. 

As a registered Biomedical Scientist, you will have the responsibility of maintaining fitness to practice and are required to participate actively in CPD.  SPS will commit to support you in developing your skills and knowledge in line with your professional growth and our business interests. A dedicated Training team and extensive resources are available to support this.

SPS are committed to support dedicated and engaged individuals looking to complete a Specialist Portfolio or equivalent post graduate qualification and SPS offer automatic progression to Band 6 upon successful completion.

Specific Responsibilities:

  • Assist and carry out duties as directed in the following areas:

Other Responsibilities:

  • Participate in and assist with clinical trials, the development of new tests and research & validation of equipment ensuring at all times compliance with all policies as required by regulatory directives, accreditation bodies and local management policies and practices.   
  • To provide technical advice to clinical staff. 
  • To perform and interpret routine and specialist Biomedical investigations and to participate daily in the scientific and technical activities of the laboratory section under the supervision of senior staff. 
  • Together with Senior staff help ensure compliance with all policies as required by regulatory directives, accreditation bodies and local management, including;
    • UKAS
    • Southwest Pathology Service policies and SOPs  
    • MHRA 
    • NHSCSP 
    • HTA 
    • HFEA 
    • Any other body in area of responsibility 
  • Utilise the laboratory LIMS, Q-Pulse quality monitoring system and other application software according to authorised protocols including assisting in computer data entry in all areas of the laboratory, document review, non-conformance review and quality assurance processes. 
  • Communicate efficiently, courteously and with clarity at all times, whether face to face, telephone or electronic methods referring enquiries to senior staff where appropriate.  Matters being communicated may include complex information and/or results. 
  • Attend and participate positively in laboratory and other meetings as directed by Laboratory senior staff.

  • As directed by senior laboratory staff, plan and prioritise work allocations, training plans, audits of both yourself and other staff, responding appropriately to the needs of routine and urgent activities. 
  • Encourage active participation in continuous professional development and support the introduction of new technologies and / or systems by being a change advocate.
  • Report all incidents and adverse events to senior staff. 
  • Demonstrate on going competency against training plans and participate positively in CPD (continuous professional development) activities.

  • Participate in risk assessment monitoring.
  • Ensure that the equipment within area of work is maintained and operated as per SOP’s.

Experience

  • Experience working in a clinical diagnostic pathology laboratory (placement or employment).
  • Experience performing routine laboratory techniques and running quality controls.

  • Experience operating Phadia, Sebia, Optilite, or Quantalyser analysers.
  • Prior experience reading or interpreting capillary electrophoresis graphs or indirect immunofluorescence screening slides.

Skills & Knowledge

  • Ability to safely complete routine analyser maintenance and handle reagents.
