Job overview

The clinical nurse specialist (CNS) will be a core member of the community Pediatric multi–disciplinary team promoting the health and wellbeing of children/ young people presenting with neurodevelopmental delay.

 The CNS will work in a variety of settings, offering advice / support / assessment and intervention to children and their families who meet the service criteria working closely with the Community Paediatrician's. Deliver follow up nurse led clinics

Main duties of the job

To provide professional and clinical leadership and expertise in the specialty of neurodevelopment and to act as a resource for education and clinical expertise in hospital and community settings.

To liaise effectively with members of the multi-professional healthcare team to achieve a coordinated specialist service.

To provide a range of quality therapeutic interventions in accordance with individual assessed need. This will include the assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of a variety of therapeutic approaches either alone or as a member of the MDT and in conjunction with the other local services, such as WAAS. 

 Work as a member of the Community Paediatrics' team contributing to service coordination care for children who have a neurodevelopmental condition/complex health condition and their families. 

Support the Community Pediatrician’s to deliver the Neurodevelopmental service (up to 18 years) and review of response to treatment and interventions, including liaison with the MDT on medication

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

·       To sustain a high-quality service within the multi-professional team.

·       Manage an active caseload of children and their carers, which will include pre-diagnosis assessment, undertaking school observation visits as part of the diagnostic assessment  management of medication, parental support and crisis support, undertaking home observation visits when necessary ry.

 

·       To prescribe/administer a limited number of drugs in accordance with Patient Group Directives..

 

·       To be knowledgeable about local/national guidelines and to be fully aware of medical treatments and current research trials, relevant to work area.

 

·       To use development assessment tools that will ensure an appropriate level of nursing intervention so that patients who present with the most complex needs are referred to the appropriate specialist.

 

·         To run nurse-led clinics whereby the problems and needs of patients with a neurodevelopmental condition and their carers are appropriately managed. To reduce outpatient waiting times for patients.

 

·       To develop and lead parent-training groups for behavioural management e.g. Webster Stratton Groups.

Qualifications & Training

Essential criteria
  • RSCN/RN child or RN Learning disabilities
  • BSc Qualification
Desirable criteria
  • Post Reg, qualification in Neurodevelopmental conditions
  • Wester Stratten Parent &Child training qualification
  • Nurse Prescriber or be willing to undertake training

Experience

Essential criteria
  • experience in a specialist practitioner role working with children with neurodevelopmental issues such as ADHD and ASD
  • Experience of planning, managing and coordinating programs of care in collaboration with other allied health professionals, social, education and volunteer agencies
  • Experience caring autonomously for complex children and families
  • Demonstrable experience of partnership working across agencies and organizations
  • Have a sound knowledge of child development
Desirable criteria
  • Experience supporting children and families with sleep and behavioral interventions
  • Experience coordinating multi-disciplinary assessment and care plans.
  • Experience managing a caseload
  • Experience of safeguarding children and families

Skills

Essential criteria
  • Clear understanding of the current national and local agenda and current issues relating to delivery of community neurodevelopment care
  • Able to demonstrate evidence based clinical practice
  • Good understanding of change management and service development
Desirable criteria
  • Counselling skills.
  • Teaching skills

Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Up to date knowledge regarding national/local guidelines/policies related to ADHD and associated problems.
  • Evidence of professional updates
Desirable criteria
  • Be willing to undertake research.
