Job overview

Microbiology at SWLP is looking for a Specialist Biomedical Scientist with experience for an Advanced Biomedical Scientist (Band 7) role.  You will be deployed in Microbiology at the St George's site. The department offers the latest equipment in the Microbiology field with three Kiestra lines, MALDI-ToF technology, Uri-system, Liaison XLs, EntericBio, BD FX, MGIT and Phoenix. There is an automated Serology track system and a specialised Molecular service including high through put analysers.

The department also offers an extensive screening program for latent TB for the London region.  

The post holder will be expected to have good knowledge and experience in Microbiology in addition to being able to demonstrate excellent problem solving skills with a strong background in quality.

It is anticipated that the post holder will initially be seconded to the quality team to support the department with the transition of a number of tasks to the technical team. Following successful transition, the post-holder will be required to resume regular technical duties along with a pre-agreed departmental bolt-on in line with all other Band 7 staff.  

Main duties of the job

  • Provides and co-ordinates specialist clinical technical services to patients that may include research and audit samples.
  • Undertakes the day to day  management of a section within the laboratory under the direction of the line manager.
  • Contributes to providing a professional clinical laboratory service, working effectively as a team member as part of the overall department.
  • Able to provide the necessary training and supervision of staff within the section.
  • Able to effectively troubleshoot bench specific issues, identify areas of concern and alert management

You will be expected to participate in a 24/7 shift system which includes weekend, night, late and bank holiday working as part of hours.

Qualifications and Training

Essential criteria
  • ·         An honours degree or equivalent in a biological science
  • ·         HCPC Registration
  • ·         MSc or equivalent specialist experience at Masters level
Desirable criteria
  • Certificate in Quality Management

Knowledge and Experience

  • ·         Proven experience post HCPC registration in the relevant discipline
  • ·         Excellent working knowledge of all aspects of specialist subject in relevant discipline
  • ·         Evidence of continuing professional development
  • ·         Knowledge of health and safety legislation
