Are you keen to earn while you learn and train as a pharmacy professional? If so, we are looking for enthusiastic, and self-motivated individuals with good interpersonal skills to join our team of Pre-registration Trainee Pharmacy Technicians (PTPTs) for our February 2026 cohort at St George’s University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. Successful completion of the qualification will enable the PTPT to register with the GPhC as a registered Pharmacy Technician.
This is an exciting opportunity to train in a friendly, forward-thinking, and highly regarded pharmacy department, home to over 300 staff. You’ll be supported by experienced colleagues and follow a structured two-year training programme, combining practical, hands-on hospital experience with a General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC)-recognised qualification. On successful completion, you’ll be eligible to register as a Pharmacy Technician — opening the door to a wide range of career opportunities, specialist training, and progression routes within our expanding department.
Main duties of the job
The postholder will follow a structured training programme at St George’s University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, whilst studying and working towards a General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC) recognised qualification. Main duties of the job Practical skills will be obtained through planned rotations throughout the hospital pharmacy department including Inpatient Pharmacy, Outpatient Pharmacy, Satellite Dispensing Units, Wards, Pharmacy Stores and Distribution, Procurement and Clinical Trials, Technical Services and Community Pharmacy. Throughout the two-year training programme trainees will develop a range of work-based skills during the training programme including:
• Dispensing and labelling medication
• Providing counselling to patients on how to use prescribed medication
• Taking drug histories and carrying out medicine reconciliation
• Assessing the suitability of patients own medicines for use
• Making the final accuracy check on prescriptions
• Preparation & maintenance of cleanrooms used to produce injectable medication
• Dispensing and compounding of injectable medication
The training programme will combine the practical experience gained in the work environment with the underpinning knowledge of a college-based qualification over a two-year period. This involves attending college one day a week, completing knowledge-based assignments and producing a portfolio of evidence to demonstrate work- based competencies.

Qualification Entry Criteria:
Applicants must hold a minimum of 4 GCSEs or equivalent, three of which must include:
• GCSE in Maths at grade A-C (9-4)/Maths Level 2 Functional Skills or equivalent
• GCSE in English Language at grade A-C (9-4/) English Functional Skills Level 2 or equivalent
• GCSE in Science (Biology/Chemistry) at grade A-C (9-4) or equivalent
• GCSE in one other subject
• Must meet apprenticeship eligibility criteria
Candidates who do not hold a sufficient Science GCSE must be able to demonstrate experience working in a pharmacy environment as a pharmacy services assistant for a minimum of 2 years and/or hold a level 2 qualification in Pharmacy – these candidates will be required to complete a Science screening assessment prior to interview. All other entry requirements remain the same as stated above.
