Job overview

We are seeking a dynamic, enthusiastic and motivated individual to work as an Occupational Therapist within the Haringey community mental health team. The post holder will provide therapeutic OT  interventions within the community and may be required to supervise a junior staff member.

The post holder will be a key member of a small supportive team and will receive regular supervision.  The appraisal process will ensure professional development through a wide range of opportunities within and external to the service.

 

Main duties of the job

The post holder will work closely with the Team Lead, OT and Therapy Lead and community teams to establish occupational therapy specific roles across the community mental health services of the Haringey. The post holder will hold a caseload and work as an occupational therapist across Haringey community services, to provide assessment, plan and implement interventions, evaluate treatment and ensure safe discharge.  The post holder will provide both specialist occupational therapy assessments and offer a strengths based, recovery focused approach with the aim of enhancing daily living skills, and engagement in meaningful and purposeful activities for service users across the community.   The occupational therapist will work across services providing specific time limited interventions with clear goals established with the service user and in conjunction with the supporting clinical team. 

The post holder will work with service users who have complex and substantial needs, often working with persons with dual diagnosis and coexisting conditions including physical health needs.  Having a working knowledge of the Mental Health Act, 1983 (amended 2007) will be required as the post holder will support service users return to or adjust to new accommodation in the community following admission to hospital and with the aim of preventing hospital admissions.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Main Respoinsibilities

·      To carry a caseload for which you have clinical responsibility.

·         Using an evidenced based approach assess client’s needs, establish aims and objectives, and plan Occupational Therapy treatment programme in consultation with members of the multi-disciplinary teams, involving the client in decisions regarding appropriate interventions.

·         To carry out a range of standardised/non-standardised assessments, e.g. MOHOST in accordance with OT Pathway to provide a baseline for OT with clear treatment objectives.

·         To provide both specific individual assessment and treatment when indicated, involving motivating, and adapting sessions and approach to allow full occupational participation. 

·         To adapt activities and assessment to facilitate persons with Cognitive difficulties, Language difficulties, social skills deficits and Challenging behaviour, to work with interpreters where required.

EDUCATION AND QUALIFICATIONS

Essential criteria
  • Diploma/degree in occupational therapy. HCPC registered occupational therapist.
Desirable criteria
  • Additional study.

EXPERIENCE AND KNOWLEDGE

Essential criteria
  • Post qualification experience in mental health, with some experience of working with adults. Establishing own professional role within a multidisciplinary team. Managing a caseload. Utilising a range of assessments, as applied to individuals, carers/families and groups.
  • Knowledge of occupational therapy models of practice and their application to mental health of older people. Knowledge of a range of assessment tools and approaches suitable to mental health practice with older people.
  • • Demonstrates knowledge of Mental Health conditions including developmental disorders, neurological disorders, personality disorders, mood disorders and psychosis.
Desirable criteria
  • Working with other agencies statutory and voluntary.
  • Supervising student and/or staff.

SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Essential criteria
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills in individual and group situations. Well organised and computer literate.
Desirable criteria
  • Experience working with computer databases and spreadsheets.

PERSONAL QUALITIES

Essential criteria
  • Work autonomously as well as effectively within a team.
  • Be willing to seek advice and supervision from colleagues.
Desirable criteria
  • • Experience with service user involvement
  • • Ability to promote positive image of OT
