We also provide some specialist services that are commissioned regionally, such as our medium secure services; and nationally, such as the Cassel Hospital for people with complex and severe personality disorder and our high secure services at Broadmoor Hospital.

We now can recruit 1 full time vacancy (1.0 WTE) for Band 7 Senior Crown Court Practitioner to join our well-established Liaison and Diversion Service in West London. This is due to internal promotion. This will be based at Isleworth Crown Court, which serves several large diverse boroughs within the West London area. 

The Crown Court Practitioner will sit within a wider Liaison and Diversion service in West London NHS Trust, forensic community services, including Court Diversion at Westminster, Ealing, Police custody in Acton and Hammersmith stations and Youth Justice Tri Borough. The post holder will be part of an established liaison and diversion service, working in partnership with the health sector, social services and the criminal justice system focusing on the Crown Court.

Main duties of the job

This scheme, commissioned by NHS England operate to a standard model and similar schemes are now available in every part of the country. It is an all-age service and all women and people under the age of 18 are screened as mandatory due to their vulnerability within the system.

The post holder will

•         Improve court case management by providing relevant psychiatric information leading to informed court decisions.

•         Assist the court in providing up to date information on a defendant’s mental health.

•         Offer a single referral/contact point for all stakeholders, inside and outside the court in any court process when mental health issues arise such as to prisons, magistrates’ courts and secure facilities.

•         Carry out ad hoc assessments at Court and advise parties who have requested the assessments of any findings.

You will need excellent communication and risk management skills and demonstrate a commitment to close partnership working with the Court staff, prisons and other agencies, both statutory and voluntary.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Registered on the NMC (Registered MH nurse) and/or HCPC, Social work England (with evidence of further education). SALT with extensive mental health experience
  • Degree/masters in relevant clinical/professional subject.
  • Substantial/meaningful evidence of continuing professional development and post registration training
Desirable criteria
  • Post-registration qualification in mental health.

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Significant experience of post qualification work
  • Significant experience of Court Liaison/Diversion work.
  • Experience of working in a multi-disciplinary/multi-agency team
  • Experience of giving written and oral evidence before Magistrates Courts and Crown Court.
Desirable criteria
  • Experience of working within Liaison and Diversion service or another criminal justice setting
  • Experience of working within a forensic or secure environment
  • Experience of conflict management and resolution.
  • Experience of successfully delivering service developments

Knowledge/Skills

Essential criteria
  • Excellent working knowledge of the MHA part 3
  • Knowledge of the principals underpinning criminal justice, social and health policy
  • Knowledge of court room skills and an ability to present information in a format acceptable to the judiciary
  • Assessment skills, including an understanding of risk assessments, mental state examinations and comprehensive health and social care assessments
Desirable criteria
  • Ability to provide training sessions that meets the needs of the service and affiliated stakeholders
  • Awareness of health issues relating to dual diagnosis
  • Awareness/knowledge of research methods
