We are seeking a registered Senior Biomedical Scientist to join the Blood Sciences Department. The laboratory is equipped with ACL TOP 500 coagulometers, Beckman Coulter DxH blood cell counters and Bio-Rad blood grouping analysers. EPIC Beaker is our main laboratory IT system, but in Blood Transfusion we have Clinisys Winpath Enterprise laboratory information system, and Haemonetics blood tracking systems are in use.
Main duties of the job
Harefield Hospital is a moderate blood user category by NHSBT and we issue around 4500 red cells per annum. We don’t have Emergency or Maternity department; however, we are Specialised heart and lung Transplant unit. Our main users are Theatres and Intensive care units. Harefield Hospital Laboratory if fully UKAS accredited laboratory, and operating as fully functional Blood Sciences laboratory.
The Successful candidate will manage the day-to-day work of the Blood transfusion laboratory, supervising the work of junior staff and using initiative to provide a high-quality service compliant with the Blood Safety and Quality Regulations and ISO standards 15189.
Senior BMS will deputise for the operational manager in matters relating to blood transfusion. Also, participate in the analytical work of the Haematology and blood transfusion laboratory, providing and coordinating specialist clinical scientific services to service users.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
At Synnovis, we are currently shaping the future of pathology services by creating a world-leading Hub and Spoke pathology network with our NHS partners. A large part of this modernisation will involve moving 70% of our services to a purpose built, state of the art Hub laboratory in the heart of London. For now, the job you are applying for will be based at one of our hospital sites however, from 1 April 2024 our people and services will start to move to our Hub laboratory in Blackfriars, Southwark, SE1, with some work remaining in refurbished essential services laboratories across our hospital network, focusing on the rapid turnover of urgent tests. Based in Uxbridge, North West London, The hospital is one of the largest and most experienced centres in the world for heart and lung transplants. It has jointly pioneered work in the development of ‘artificial hearts’ (also known as left ventricular assist devices or LVADs).
At our dedicated heart attack centre, we deal with heart attack emergencies from outer north-west London, providing primary angioplasty in our specialist catheter laboratories. We believe our arrival-to-treatment time of 27 minutes is one of the fastest in Europe. Speed of treatment has been shown to be crucial to survival in these cases.

Qualifications
Essential criteria
- FIBMS Haematology or Transfusion Science
- IBMS Higher Specialist Diploma in Transfusion Science
- IBMS-accredited MSc in Haematology and/or Blood Transfusion
- IBMS-accredited MSc with a transfusion specialism of at least 120 level 7 CATS points BBTS Specialist Certificate
Desirable criteria
- Participation in an organised CPD scheme
- Management qualification
- Quality management qualification
Experience
Essential criteria
- Thorough knowledge of Haematology and blood transfusion backed by practical experience, preferably in a hospital laboratory setting
- Understanding of quality management systems and experience in maintaining good laboratory practice

- Previous experience of team leadership
