Main duties of the job

THE WORK OF THE DEPARTMENT

The Hillingdon Trauma & Orthopaedic department is run by 15 Consultants.  13 of these run the trauma service over a 15 week rolling rota. On their non-trauma weeks, they run an elective service alongside the remaining 2 consultants.  There is a 30 bedded Orthopaedic Ward currently catering emergency patients at Hillingdon. A short-stay Orthopaedic speciality ward at Mount Vernon Hospital is part of the department, catering only for elective patients. There is also a Day Case surgical unit on each of the two hospitals to which all Consultants have access with other specialities. There are beds as required on a separate paediatric unit.

There is a wide range of general elective orthopaedics undertaken, the Consultants covering most of the elective orthopaedic sub specialities.  For trauma, each Consultant's ‘take’ is for one week at a time. There is a daily morning x-ray conference followed by a trauma round and then a new patient fracture clinic.  In the afternoon there is also an all-day operating list for trauma patients that have been admitted.  This provides an excellent opportunity for teaching and experience.  The department is fully equipped for modern trauma management.

Working for our organisation

HILLINGDON HOSPITAL

Hillingdon Hospital is a modern district general hospital and a first wave self-governing Trust, currently in the process of applying for Foundation Trust status. Situated in Uxbridge in the south of the London Borough of Hillingdon, it has over 600 beds and offers a wide range of specialities.  Amongst these services is a large Accident and Emergency Department, which deals with approximately 100,000 attendances a year.

At the Hillingdon Site there are 7 operating theatres and adjacent to this is a critical care facility comprising 5 ITU and 4 HDU beds. The hospital has a Day Care Unit comprising 23 beds. The Division of Clinical Support Services offers excellent diagnostic facilities in pathology, radiology (Plain film, CT & MRI scanning) and medical physics.

The Trust has a board of Directors, including 5 non-executive Directors, who are responsible for the business planning of the hospital. They are committed to providing the greatest range of services possible, at high quality.

As a result of input from Professor Timothy Briggs and the Getting It Right First Time team, the Trust’s sister site, Mount Vernon Hospital, has a ring fenced Orthopaedic ward called Trinity ward. Mount Vernon also has 4 operating theatres. The majority of elective surgery in the Orthopaedic department is done at Mount Vernon hospital.
