Job overview

We are seeking an enthusiastic and skilled Registered Mental Health Nurse to join our Adult Forensic Services inpatient team.

 

This is an excellent opportunity to contribute to safe, compassionate, recovery‑focused care within a specialist forensic environment.

 

As a Band 5 Mental Health Nurse, you will deliver high‑quality nursing care to inpatients in line with professional and service standards. You will:

- Provide safe and effective care within an acute inpatient environment, - supporting individuals with a range of mental health needs. 

- Assess, plan, implement and evaluate patient‑centred nursing care for a varied caseload. 

- Act as a named nurse for designated service users, ensuring continuity of care and meaningful therapeutic engagement. 

- Work collaboratively with the wider multidisciplinary team to deliver safe, effective care pathways.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will act as a named nurse for a designated caseload, delivering high‑quality, person‑centred care through assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation. Working collaboratively with ward staff and the multidisciplinary team, they will provide clinical interventions in line with individual care plans and liaise with internal and external services to ensure coordinated pathways.

They will contribute to a positive, evidence‑based ward culture, uphold Trust policies, support Clinical Governance, comply with the Care Programme Approach and Mental Health Act, and maintain accurate clinical and electronic records. Effective communication with colleagues, families, and partner agencies is essential.

The role includes promoting dignity and privacy, supporting practice development, and responding safely to distress, aggression, or violence using approved PMVA techniques. The post holder will help prevent incidents and safeguard patient property.

They will mentor students, support newly qualified staff, participate in audit and research, assist with induction, and maintain up‑to‑date PMVA and clinical skills. The nurse must uphold Trust values, promote equality, ensure high‑quality record keeping, follow health and safety and infection‑prevention requirements, and take responsibility for ongoing learning and development.

Education/Qualification

Essential criteria
  • Current Full UK NMC registration
  • Mental Health Nursing Degree
Desirable criteria
  • Completion of Mentorship/Practice Supervisor or willingness to work towards

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Post qualifying experience as mental health nurse and completion of UK preceptorship
  • Working within an In-Patient environment.
  • Evidence of continuing professional development.
  • Experience of working alongside people with severe mental health problems particularly in their acute phase of illness
  • Experience of working within a multi-disciplinary team
  • Experience of conducting clinical assessments including risk assessments
  • Experience of partnership working within and across various statutory and non statutory teams and agencies
  • Experience of working within the CPA process

Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Awareness of current best practice guidance and clinical guidance including relevant NICE guidance.
  • Awareness of current trends in acute mental health and psychiatric nursing.
  • Knowledge of relevant legislation, e.g. Mental Heath Act (1983).
  • Awareness of research methods and clinical audit cycle.
  • Understanding of Care Programme Approach.

  • Ability to participate in and achieve full competence in training relevant to the post, e.g. .PMVA, moving and handling.
  • Ability to administer IM medication as required.
  • Ability to use manual handling techniques.
