THE POST OF CLINICAL FELLOW IN ADVANCED ADULT ECHOCARDIOGRAPHY

Applications are invited for a clinical fellowship in advanced adult echocardiography based at Wythenshawe Hospital for a minimum of 12 months starting in July/August 2024. The successful candidate will take up a senior cardiology trainee position in this tertiary and quaternary centre that includes the specialities of cardiology, cardiac surgery, thoracic surgery, heart/lung transplantation, Ventricular assist devices and ECMO. The fellow will be trained in high volumes of stress echo and TOE to prepare for the BSE accreditation exams. A number of our sonographers examine for the BSE and we host some of the practical exams for them. We are commissioned to carry out Mitraclips, PFO closures and TAVI so this post would also be an opportunity to learn advanced 3D TOE for structural intervention. The job also involves tertiary cardiology on-calls including supporting primary PCI and fielding regional referrals for EP, advanced heart failure, valve disease and endocarditis services. Wythenshawe also has a satellite ACHD service and exposure to this will be facilitated through out-patient clinics. If training in cardiac MR or CT is desirable, there would be an option to extend the fellowship to 2 years. Please contact Dr Anita Macnab on [email protected] if further information is required.

The purpose of this post is to offer comprehensive training in echocardiography with particular emphasis on stress-echocardiography and 3D TOE. Day to day duties will include performing stress lists, TOE lists, TTE lists, cardiology clinics and attendance at MDTs. The fellow will be expected to help supervise and support junior doctors, physiologists and specialist nurses. The trainee will be supervised by Dr Anita Macnab and will be exclusively based at Wythenshawe Hospital. There will be a commitment to provide in-patient care for cardiology patients under the imaging consultants. The general on-call for cardiology middle grades is a 1 in 13 full shift rota with the other Fellows and the Deanery SpRs in the department. On-call commitments will include supporting the primary PCI service and looking after cardiology in-patients, triaging and managing referrals and inter-hospital transfers. Even though there is always a consultant interventionalist on-call, all middle grades at Wythenshawe need to be competent in basic cath lab invasive procedures such as left heart catheterisation, pericardiocentesis and temporary pacing.

Please see job description attached for further information.
