Job overview
An excellent opportunity exists for an enthusiastic and highly skilled hand therapist to join a dynamic and progressive multi-disciplinary team in one of the largest hand therapy units in the UK at Wythenshawe Hospital in South Manchester.
The post is open to an Occupational Therapist or a Physiotherapist with specialist experience treating hand patients of varying complexity.
Main duties of the job
The role will be across 2 sites, The main hand unit is based in the Plastic Surgery Out-Patient Department, the hand therapy team accepts referrals from plastic surgery, orthopaedics, rheumatology, the emergency department and the Tier 2 Physiotherapy Assessment Service. The second site is at Trafford General Hospital, this service is primarily orthopaedic led.
The successful candidate will work autonomously and as part of the MFT Hand Therapy Team. They will act as a source of clinical expertise in the management of hand patients. They will work closely with the MDT especially the plastics nurses and the Plastic Surgery and Orthopaedic hand surgeons covering the full spectrum of hand surgery with a predominantly trauma based caseload. There will also be an expectation to participate in some of the Practitioner Led Therapy Clinics.

Person specification
Qualifications
Essential criteria
- Grad Dip Phys/BSc (Physiotherapy) or Grad Dip OT/BSc (Occupational Therapy)
- State Registered on HCPC Register
- Post registration qualification / experience in hand therapy
- Evidence of post graduate work/Advanced Course attendance in Hand therapy e.g. BAHT accredited or equivalent
- Desire to undertake further study
Experience
Essential criteria
- Experience at senior level in hand therapy
- Active participation in the audit process
- Experience of independent assessment and teaching in this clinical area
- Membership of British Association of Hand Therapists
Desirable criteria
- Active participation in service development
- Completion of BAHT Level II: Radiographic Imaging of the Hand
Skills
Essential criteria
- Highly specialised skills in hand therapy assessment and treatment including splinting skills requiring a high level of manual dexterity.
- Able to work autonomously and under pressure.
- Effective communicator with colleagues and a diverse range of patients and carers
- Able to teach effectively and present information to multiprofessional group
- Able to effectively carry out the assessment of postsurgical hand trauma patients and be competent in care planning. This includes tendon and nerve injuries, fracture management as well as extensive hand and forearm trauma
- Excellent and proven leadership skills
- Advanced clinical reasoning/analytical skills
- Evidence of CPD and the ability to influence change in practice
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Excellent I.T. skills
Knowledge
Essential criteria
- Excellent knowledge of hand therapy
- Awareness of the political / national situation
- Understanding of Clinical Governance and its implications to practice
Desirable criteria
- Good insight into national policies or standards for hand therapy

You must have appropriate UK professional registration.
