Job overview

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced Respiratory Physiologist to join the team in the North West Ventilation Service, Wythenshawe Hospital. This role is for a 12-month maternity leave secondment.

The North West Ventilation Service is a tertiary referral centre for long-term non-invasive/invasive ventilation and cough augmentation therapy, with approximately 1700 patients under our service. A well established multi-disciplinary team is responsible for managing these patients across the inpatient, outpatient and community settings. The successful candidate will work alongside the Specialist team of Nurses, Physiotherapists, Medical Consultants and Occupational Therapists. 

Main duties of the job

The position will involve:

Performing, analysing and reporting on in-patient and outpatient sleep studies (including on NIV/CPAP).

Initiating treatment with CPAP and Bi-Level Non-Invasive Ventilation. and delivering teaching and training to patients and carers on the use of these devices.

Teaching, training and mentoring of students and junior staff.

This post will predominantly be based within the inpatient and outpatient settings on the North West Ventilation Unit, but there may be a requirement to deliver some aspects of care within the community.  Direct support will be provided from the Lead Physiotherapists and Lead Nurse for the service, alongside other members of the MDT. Profession specific supervision is available from the Wythenshawe Lung-Function department and WTWA Sleep Service.

Person specification

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Relevant Sleep/ventilation Experience
  • Competent in setting up, downloading and scoring respiratory sleep studies
  • Competent in setting up, monitoring and troubleshooting CPAP procedures
Desirable criteria
  • Experience in setting up, monitoring and troubleshooting Bi-Level non-invasive ventilation
  • Experience of supervising staff or students
  • Experience of working within the NHS or similar Public Health Services.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • BSc Biological or Physiological Sciences or Equivalent
  • Registered with RCCP, AHCS or BRPT (or eligible for registration)
  • Evidence of Continuing Professional Development
Desirable criteria
  • Further Sleep Qualifications (RPSGT etc)
  • Mentoring/Teaching Qualifucations
  • Evidence of participation in Research

Skill

Essential criteria
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to use own initiative to coordinate, plan and prioritise work
  • Ability to work autonomously.
  • Ability to keep accurate documentation.
  • Ability to work under pressure and to meet deadlines.
  • Good organisational skills, methodical, reliable.

Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • A good understanding of sleep physiology and pathology.
  • A good understanding of respiratory physiology and pathology.
Desirable criteria
  • A good understanding of conditions requiring bi-level non-invasive ventilation
