Applications are invited for a Locum Consultant Surgeon in Renal and Pancreatic Transplant and Organ Retrieval. However, a substantive position may be agreeable for suitable candidates. This post is based at the Manchester Royal Infirmary. The post will focus on delivering pancreatic and renal (both live and deceased) transplantation, vascular access surgery, and provide input to the organ retrieval (NORS) service. There will be an opportunity to shape the post around clinical interests to aid in excellence in service delivery and to support career development.

Manchester Royal Infirmary provides kidney and pancreas transplantation, encapsulating peritoneal sclerosis (EPS) surgery and islet transplantation.

In addition, there is a large service of General and endocrine surgery and we are also part of the National Organ Retrieval Service. Our transplant programme cares for both adults and children. The department has 10 consultants and 15 middle grades and is part of the  Renal, Haematology and Transplant (RHT) Care Division. This appointment offers an excellent opportunity for candidates to contribute to the service, including consultant on calls, with scheduled emergency lists and elective opportunities, all with ample mentorship and support within a collegiate environment, with an opportunity to develop skills.

Main duties of the job

We are passionate about providing first-class care to our patients and focused on delivering treatment in a quality and timely manner. We are recruiting to the position of Consultant Transplant Surgeon to join our team of clinicians for twelve months.

This is an excellent opportunity to work in a friendly and growing kidney transplant unit. We are looking for an enthusiastic and committed consultant colleague who will work effectively within the team and contribute to the further development of the unit. The appointee will join the other nine Consultant Surgeons in a joint multidisciplinary, multi-professional Transplant team at Manchester University Hospital Foundation Trust.

Person specification

Qualifications and training

Essential criteria
  • MBChb or equivalent
  • FRCS or equivalent
  • Broad experience of Renal Transplant surgery
  • Experience in all forms of access surgery
  • Experience in Renal and Pancreatic retrieval
  • Completion of higher specialist training in Surgery (or within 6 months of CTT date, from date of interview)
  • Competence in multiorgan retrieval with full registration with NHSBT or equivalent
  • Higher specialist training in Transplant surgery or equivalent
Desirable criteria
  • Higher degree (MD/ChM/PHD)
  • Experience in live donor surgery
  • Experience of Paediatric transplantation
  • Experience of Endocrine surgery
  • Experience of Normothermic Regional Perfusion for DCD retrievals
  • Ability to undertake research and publications in medical literature with some in the Transplant field
  • Experience in Pancreas transplantation or a commitment to be mentored in pancreas transplantation within one year of appointment
  • Experience of EPS surgery

Teaching and audit
